Tomorrow morning roughly seventy percent of the leases in this city turn over at the same moment, and Boston does the strangest thing it does all year. 📦
September 1 is Moving Day, and the version that plays out in Allston, Fenway, Mission Hill and Brighton has earned its own name. Allston Christmas is what people call the hours when the sidewalks fill with everything the last tenant decided not to carry down three flights of stairs. Couches, bookshelves, lamps, half a kitchen, a mattress leaning against a fence that everyone silently agrees to walk past. Somebody signing their first lease is going to furnish an entire apartment off a curb tomorrow. Somebody else is going to wedge a rented box truck under a Storrow Drive overpass, because that happens every single year without fail. 🛋️
It is a genuinely odd thing to organize an entire city around, and it happened almost by accident. Boston has an enormous student population, landlords lined lease terms up with the academic calendar, and the pattern simply hardened into tradition. Now it sits on the city's own calendar with extra trash pickup, permit rules and an annual public warning about low bridges. 🚚
If you have lived here any real length of time you have been on both sides of it, the one hauling the couch out to the curb and the one carrying it home.
