Today in Rodbuilding...

Tie off and trim for an open diamond wrap. First is a solid wrap of the darkest color Fuji Rod Components Ultrapoly thread which is tied off, then the trim is wrapped on the bare blank. In this case Fuji Metallic, then two NOCP, then finally 3 shades of Ultrapoly and a Metallic accent. The wrap is continued up and over the original tie off wrap. The using two layers of the darkest Ultrapoly helps mitigate lighter colors from bleeding through in the tie off area.

Wrapping guides on a freshwater swimbait build. Each guide wrap (9 guides plus tip) on this build consists of 14 color changes per side. If you sat in on my presentation about balancing decoration and performance Anglers Resource Mastering Rodbuilding event this is an excellent example of some of the considerations and methods I use to ensure the rods performance isn't significantly diminished. I knew I wanted to add lots of shading and color changes so I made my wraps with size A Fuji Rod Components thread. Although the wraps are absolutely longer than I normally wrap them when there are less colors, using A thread allows me to get more detail in a shorter space than if I had wrapped them with size D. I also used Titanium Torzite LKW guides which are lighter than the comparable frame in stainless steel offsetting some of the added weight of the longer guide wraps if not actually making the overall build lighter. I also had them anodized by my friend Mike Back Creek Custom Rods which adds no weight but really elevates the finished look. The next step is to finish. The key is applying enough to coat and protect the threads without any imperfections such as stick ups from a tie off or dust landing in the finish while curing, but not much more.

I will be weighing this build prior to finish being applied to the guides (there is already a coat on the trim between the split grips and 2 coats over the feather inlay) and after it is completed. I will share the results here. How much weight do you think the finish will add?

Applying the first coat of finish on a decorative wrap. If you attended the Mastering Rodbuilding seminar put on by the wonderful folks at Anglers Resource this is the sample wrap I laid out and wrapped a few passes on during the decorative wraps seminar. Many threads and hours later we finally get to see it come to life under finish. Because I did not use color preserver the Ultrapoly Fuji Rod Components thread darkens and becomes transparent while the NOCP threads stay opaque and more true to the color you see on the spool adding depth similar to when you apply stain or finish to wood. Once this initial coat has sufficiently hardened I will trim any stick ups, wrap the trim flanking the wrap to match the guide wraps and apply several more finish coats.

Wrapping the at the tip end of a rod is always the most difficult, this one was at level 100 difficulty. This is a the first guide on a 4wt fly rod with a size 3.5 tip. The flexibility and thin diameter make ex*****on of starting a guide much more challenging, let alone doing a fade wrap. This one guide took 25 minutes luckily they will get a little quicker as I work down to the but of the rod.

I applied the first coat of finish on this build with real Copperhead skin and some trim. You can see how the Fuji Rod Components Ultrapoly thread darkens and richer as the epoxy soaks in while the NOCP stays much closer to what you see before finish.

I wrapped the new Fuji Rod Components MC guides for the first time on a personal build. These things are seriously sweet, super strong, lightweight and the shape of the feet makes them a dream to wrap even if you are like me and never prep guide feet.

The Ruby Rod reveal. A very special build from start to finish and the pinnacle of my journey as a rodbuilder.

Early in my rodbuilding journey I heard of Fuji guides with real rubies but they seemed like a mythical creature, the unicorn of rodbuilding. There were pictures and videos of them online, but doubted I would ever get see one in person. That all changed when I was presented with my own as a gift from Fuji Japan recognizing my position as a Global Rodbuilding Ambassador. Even with my own I didn't think I would be fortunate to build a rod featuring these beauties, until I mentioned them to John Walsh who gave me free range to create a one off piece with these ultra rare gems.

She features CTS Air EA709 blank in beautiful Marlin finish. The grips incorporate rich birch bark, two types of stabilized wood, blue burl cork, flor grade cork and white highlights all polished to 7000 grit for a beautiful satin finish with Matagi color shift painted TCH reel seat. Above the foregrip a feather inlay with over a dozen bird species each feather is meticulously placed over beautifully shaded thread wrapping. The build is capped off with the Ruby guides wrapped on the rod at Icast.

I am so very grateful for all of my fans, friends, customers, colleagues, and mentors who have supported, inspired, shared knowledge and pushed me in the pursuit of perfection. Without all of you this rod never would have come to be. I must mention a few especially influential parties. Steve Kolb, built me my first three custom rods, and guided me through the basics of rodbuilding. Billy Vivona for expanded my understanding of the art, aesthetically and technically. We had the pleasure of watching Garone Custom Rods and Tackle wrap this beauty in our booth at ICAST.

This build featured the pinnacle of FUJI craftsmanship with Titanium Frame Ruby Ring guides, paired with a painted color-flip TCH reel seat and custom stabilized wood and cork grips.

Mike finished it off with his signature feather inlays and flawless fade wraps. This rod is a true work of art

And yes, those rings are really made from real rubies
