Weekly Farm Chronicles: 2026-25

1-4. I had to stop and take a moment this week to appreciate how far the farm has come. I often get lost in forward-thinking, trying to stay 5 steps ahead of all of the many tasks and to dos that come with the territory of running a farming business. But as I looked around one evening, I paused to reflect. It was only 2 years ago that what is now beautiful row crops was an empty field, full of weeds and debris and bits of trash. It has truly been transformed and now yields incredible flowers to share with the community. I’m grateful for the land and the work that comes with stewarding it.

6-7. Despite the cooler temps, many beautiful flowers remain and there’s still abundance to come.

Weekly Farm Chronicles: 2026-24

The OG dahlias! On the left is ‘Ivanetti’ and the right is ‘Caitlin’s Joy’. They have been on the market for a long time and are easy to find (plus pretty cheap!), AND they are so dang gorgeous. Not all beautiful dahlias are unicorns that are impossible to buy.

This is a chonky 50 stem bouquet and let’s be clear… I would never make and bring this to a farmer’s market or pop up. But sometimes we see these massive, lush, hand tied bouquets on social media and think “how much could that possibly be? $50? $75??” Nuh uh, my friends. To make a living doing this, it has to be higher.

I typically aim for $25 - $50 bouquets if I’m selling retail at a market. I start with the price I want to sell my bouquet for, then work backwards to fill in flowers that fit the bill.

2x is a pretty conservative markup. If I was designing for a wedding or event, or if I was a florist with a studio or a brick and mortar, it would be much more.

We’re in that transition phase - the end of summer is waltzing into fall. The flowers are here for it and showing off at this point, so make sure you get a bouquet or two before they’re gone.

Weekly Farm Chronicles: 2026-22

1. Last fall I planted a ton of perennials that I’m banking on cutting from for many years. Hydrangea were top of the list, so I put in 100 ft of them. I won’t be able to cut long, sellable stems for a couple more years, but they started producing small bloom heads a few weeks ago. They are so whimsically beautiful that I can’t wait to cut the real deal.

2. The dahlia field is coming along. This is ‘Bloomquist York’ and it should be available to buy in our winter tuber sale so that you can grow it in your own garden.

3-4. Summer abundance = lush bouquets and overflowing work benches.

5. Sunflower ‘Darjeeling’ is my all time favorite.

6. Happy to make a home for the froggies. A strong ecosystem includes reptiles and amphibians, so I love seeing these friends around.

August feels a little bit like the calm before the storm. Harvest is the name of the game right now, but soon we’ll switch gears to flipping beds and planting in the fall for spring flowers. Stay tuned for some behind the scenes looks at that process!

Weekly Farm Chronicles: 2026-21

1. It’s hot and I’m sweaty, but I’m smiling because the air has CLEARED! We’re back to healthy and breathable quality. You never know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone, and boy is that true about clean air. Because earlier in the week…

2. I looked like this during harvest. Can’t say it was fun, but it worked and I managed to get flowers harvested despite conditions. Btw, the flowers in pic 1 were dropped Yours Truly last night. Go get!

3. Bouquet making is at its best right now. Thank you for stopping by the flower stand and supporting the farm!

4-5. Dahlia cataloging has begun. It’s a little bit of an arduous process, but I’m always so grateful to have lots of photos to work with once I prep and plan for my tuber sale.

6-7. A couple of field shots - dahlias and zinnias, respectively.

8. I’m growing a bit of produce this season. These strawberries have been my favorite so far. I ate them with breakfast this morning.

9. The ducks are learning to wander a little more through the field. Sound on to hear how loud they are. I’m hoping they’ll be bug foraging pros through the flowers rows in no time.

It feels counterintuitive at first, but I promise that you won’t hurt your plants by cutting stems past where you see the next flower buds forming. On the contrary, it will only give you more flowers with super long, sturdy stems. Cutting short keeps subsequent stems short and your flowers small. Even if you’re not cutting to put flowers in an arrangement, deadheading should be the same process - cut longer stems for spent flowers so your next blooms are big and beautiful.
