We strive to carry a complete selection of monthly comic books, comic and art related magazines, graphic novels, manga, back issues, comics history/art/reference books, newspaper comic strip collections, artist biographies/collections and a handful of toys, posters and t-shirts. Our staff is knowledgable and passionate about comics as eternal art or disposable gutter trash.

Hello everyone! Wren, your resident manga fiend at Cosmic Monkey, is here to tell you about some new and notable titles at the shop!

This week, I want to recommend a thrilling post-apocalyptic story coming back from being out-of-print for almost a decade, Dragon Head by KodanshaBooks!

Dragon Head is a slow burn, post-apocalyptic thriller about two teens fighting for survival after their train derails and crashes inside a tunnel. Surrounded by utter darkness, with their friends, classmates, and teachers' bodies strewn around them, Tero and Seto must try to not just survive physically, but a Lord of the Flies scenario between the two of them and their last remaining classmate…

This cult series’ story is no stranger to twists and turns, having Teru and Seto witness bizarre and dark rituals as they struggle against the ever loosening grip of modern reality, ecological devastation from an unknown environmental disaster, and attempt to survive the madness that lurks within the darkness itself. This story has quickly become a favorite of mine, one that truly scares me.

I love the way this series explores how traumatic events can turn modern day people into “savages,” making the reader feel just as overcome with dread as Teru and Seto, who never truly feel safe. Minetarō Mochizuki’s sometimes weirdly proportioned but adeptly realistic art style mixed with big patches of pure black in every panel really adds an intensity of connection, as Tero and Seto continue to meet strange and very human characters fighting against unbeatable odds.
