Not at all our usual fare, but I couldn’t let this survivor of the B&O Railroad go unnoticed.

The glass is thick and full of bubbles and etched with the railway name.

What a romantic time it conjures up of people signaling and waving thru trains, en route to distant destinations. Undoubtably electronic devices are safer but it’s sad the human touch is being lost to us.

I’m not an expert but I believe this lantern would have been unpainted originally. That aside, it is complete, including wick, and in remarkably good condition.

You’ll find it at Pine Hills.

Obligatory Autumn post… although it makes me sad.

Summer is my season and I get melancholy this time of year. When I start to hear crickets in the late afternoon I know summer is drawing to a close and blue skies will soon be replaced by gray ones.

But these brightly colored wall plaques can cheer up even the dullest day.

You never know what you will find at The Bins.

Honestly this surprised even me! I don’t know how this remained unscathed AND with the key.

When I first pulled it out, there was no pendulum. I was dithering about buying it or not (it’s heavy… so you know… you pay by the pound…)

As I was debating internally, an employee began unlocking the wheels to take the bin away. I asked her to please give me a second to see if I could find the pendulum and I was delighted when I saw it at the very bottom.

It works, including the hour and half hour chimes. It doesn’t run consistently so it clearly needs cleaning and fine tuning.

I loved finding this 100+ year old survivor.
