We are currently carrying a compilation LP of experimental noise musicians all from our very own town of Richmond VA in celebration of csx_richmond happening this weekend. Some familiar faces and friends are on this slice of wax! We have a few copies at the shop and more are for sale at Studio Two Three this evening. Thanks to Gen Ken for bringing these by!

“I just happened to be reading the N.Y. Times when the news of Cassandra Wilson’s passing posted. 70 years old! Profoundly sad!!!

In the mid to later part of the 90s, I was enamored with Cassandra Wilson. She was gorgeous and her soul, music, voice and song interpretations matched her physical beauty. She covered everyone from Miles Davis, to the Monkees, to Cyndi Lauper. She made these songs her own. She said “I don’t have a problem with doing music that’s popular. Billie Holiday and even Charlie Parker interpreted what was known as the popular music of that time. I don’t see any difference in that and what I’m doing.”

I saw her 4 times. One set list is from Christopher Newport in 1998 and the other from the Carpenter Center in 1999. I also got to see her at the New Orleans Jazz Festival in 1999. She lived in New Orleans in the early 1980s and the city was special to her. In addition to her Fairgrounds set, she did an early Fest related performance at a Catholic girls high school
auditorium. To the best of my memory, it was just her guitarist and percussionist. After about 30 seconds of impromptu riffing, a small group of girls started clapping along. Before you knew it, everyone had joined in! Cassandra was beaming from the stage! That few minutes of spontaneity, provided an overwhelming joy, that only music can provide. Thank you, Cassandra!”

Rest in Peace Dolly Parton 🕊️ Dolly was an artist and celebrity who gave back to her community. Instead of hoarding her wealth she spent it making sure kids were staying educated, putting books in the hands of young people who otherwise wouldn’t have the privilege. She paved the way for women to be on stage in an industry long dominated by men. She showed that there is nothing wrong with truly being yourself and you should always keep an open heart. Truly one of the greatest humans and we’re lucky to have shared this timeline with her ❤️ The ticket Jay left says Nov. 2, 1977 and the note he left me says “I just remember smiling a lot!”

Morning Groovers! A few things… 1.) we have a very nice Denon DP-300F table up for grabs. 2.) we have brought back out our used 10” section… and 3.) we’ve bought a solid batch of used 12”s (mostly new wave and post punk) so we made a section for those too 😎
