Christmas is coming faster than it feels!

If you’re planning on giving something custom this year, now is the time to get those orders in before the holiday rush gets completely out of hand.

Thinking about trying something a little different for this year’s It’s a Wonderful Life ornaments.

Would there be enough interest in a design contest?

The winning design would become one of this year’s ornaments, with full credit going to the artist… and probably something a lil extra too.

One big rule: no AI generated designs. I want this to be about actual creativity, drawing, illustration, and ideas made by real people.

Before I put together the official rules and prize, I want to know if people would actually participate.

Here’s a pretty unique one from over the summer.

A hand painted milk jug urn with real cowhide on it.

I can’t say I’ve ever seen anything quite like this before, which made it a pretty interesting piece to engrave.

One of the things I like about custom work is you never really know what’s going to show up next.

This one is a little more personal than what I normally post.

I recently finished making an urn for my dad’s ashes, and there were a lot of emotions going through my head while I built it.

My dad and I had a complicated relationship. We weren’t always particularly close, and for a lot of years he was the guy telling me I should go back to school, go to trade school, join the military, or find a more conventional path.

Then a few years ago, he finally told me he was proud of me.

I don’t think I’ll ever forget that.

He taught me a lot of what I know today, probably more than I realized until I got older. And while we may not have always seen eye to eye, he was still my dad.

So when it came time to find something for his ashes, being able to make it myself just felt right.

It might not be perfect, but neither was our relationship. I’m just glad I was able to use the skills I’ve picked up along the way to make something nice for him with my own hands.

Of everything I’ve made in this shop, this one means a little more.

Coffee is flowing, lasers are running, and I’m trying to knock out as much as possible before the weekend.

Well… I guess I should probably start posting again.

The shop has been absolutely crazy lately with 3 large ornament orders, a pile of parts to mark, and only one person here doing all the things. Social media kind of got pushed to the bottom of the list for a bit.

So here I am.

This is one of my favorite recent projects. Made from local walnut and engraved on both sides for an outdoor sign. Engraved, then paint filled, and coated way too many times with sealer to shield from the elements

I really love how this one turned out.

What do you think, should I show more of the random custom jobs that come through the shop?

Here’s a behind the scenes look at the limited edition Ovid Three Bears ornaments being laser engraved on stainless steel.

Each one is individually numbered, and the proceeds are helping support the effort to rebuild Ovid.

Once these 100 are gone, they’re gone.
