ARTS Southeast is proud to welcome Nathaniel Thompson Nathaniel Thompson to the Incubator Artist Initiative! Please join us in welcoming Nathaniel during First Friday Open Studios next Friday, September 4, from 5 - 9PM, in conjunction with Starland District First Friday !

Nathaniel Thompson (b. 1997) was born in Thailand and immigrated to the United States, spending his formative years across various regions of Georgia, particularly on St. Simons Island. He currently resides in Savannah, Georgia. As a multidisciplinary artist, Thompson’s work spans photography, painting, and sculpture while incorporating found objects and reclaimed materials. Inspired by his surroundings and experiences, Thompson explores themes of the mundane, deterioration, and transformation.

Established in 2024, the Incubator Artist Initiative provides Savannah-based emerging artists with free studio space, exhibition opportunities, professional development, community engagement, and mentorship. The Incubator Artist participates in Open Studios during Starland First Fridays, volunteers part-time with ARTS Southeast, and works as a liaison with our visiting ON::View Resident artists from around the world to foster a vibrant arts community.

The Incubator Artist Initiative is made possible with investment by the City of Savannah, Gilbert & Ezelle Commercial Real Estate, and in partnership with SCAD Museum of Art and Telfair Museums. This program is sponsored in part by Georgia Council for the Arts through the appropriations of the Georgia General Assembly. Georgia Council for the Arts also receives support from its partner agency - the National Endowment for the Arts National Endowment f/t Arts.

Join us on Wednesday, September 9, at 6:15PM (doors open at 6PM) for a Curator Talk with Lisa Jaye Young, in conjunction with her exhibition, “Rooted,” currently on display in The Ellis Gallery! Lisa Jaye Young

Lisa Jaye Young is a parent, educator, independent writer, and curator, in that order. She earned a PhD from The Graduate Center, City University of New York. She contributes to art magazines, exhibition catalogs, and books, often with emphasis on art and feminism, ecocritical reflections, and a visual history of capital. She is faculty at SCAD, is a founding-editor for Decatur Dixon Press, and founder of LJY Arts & Letters.

“Rooted,” a group exhibition featuring Cheryl Capezzuti, Susan Fuller, N. Masani Landfair, Anissa Mack, and Samantha Mack, is on display in The Ellis Gallery at ARTS Southeast through September September 12, 2026.

CLOSING RECEPTION: Friday, September 4, 5 - 9PM
In conjunction with Starland District First Friday

Creative consciousness often begins in early childhood, emerging in unexpected moments– during a garden walk, a casual lesson, a conversation, or quiet LEGO play. These small encounters with making and observing accumulate, rooted in the textures and rhythms of home life. Family spaces, filled with objects, memories, and routines, shape early creative awareness, even if their influence is only recognized later. Yet art history often reduces these origins, favoring narratives of individual identity over domestic influence.

The five artists in “Rooted” work across distinct practices but share an engagement with family as a generative force. Through collage, found materials, and reimagined domestic forms, they transform everyday remnants into sites of reflection and possibility. “Rooted” is not about being fixed, but about choosing what grounds us, inviting viewers to reconsider what they carry forward, reshape, or release.

Marcus Kenney (b. 1972) was born and raised in rural Louisiana and lives and works in Savannah, Georgia. Kenney earned an M.F.A. in photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design. He works in many mediums including sculpture, painting and photography and neon.

Kenney’s narrative works present a tumultuous clash of imagery reflecting America’s melting pot of culture and considering issues including consumerism, environmentalism, religion, mortality, identity, race relations and authority.

Kenney has exhibited in museums, institutions, galleries and art fairs internationally, including Tel Aviv, Paris, London, Montréal, New York, Boston, Chicago, Kansas City, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Miami and Portland. His work has been featured and reviewed in Art in America, New American Painting, Art Papers, New York Times, Boston Globe, ArtVoices, Atlanta Journal Constitution, New York Art Magazine, and Art News. ARTS Southeast is excited to share the artists selected for Session One and Session Two of our newest program, the Ossabaw Island Residency!

The Ossabaw Island Residency (OIR) continues the island’s legacy as a haven for creatives and intellectuals. In 1961, the island’s co-owner Sandy West and her husband Clifford B. West founded the Ossabaw Island Project, a multidisciplinary residency program that invited internationally renowned figures to spend uninterrupted time on the island.

ARTS Southeast reimagines the island’s tradition of creative study rooted in nature, culture, and reflection for a new era with the Ossabaw Island Residency, advancing our commitment to deep creative inquiry by providing artists with time and space on Ossabaw. The OIR is intended for ideas to emerge and take shape, free from urban distractions. We are excited to host emerging, mid-career, and established artists to pursue self-directed work shaped by solitude, a sense of place, and the pace of natural rhythms.
