“A narwhal is a medium-sized, toothed whale that is only found in Arctic waters. It is different from all other toothed whales in that it has no teeth in its mouth. Instead, male narwhals have a single long, straight tooth (or tusk) that protrudes two to three meters out of the upper left jaw. Females almost never have a tusk. The tooth grows in a counterclockwise spiral.

The scientific name for these whales, Monodon monoceros, means “one tooth, one horn.” - from NOAA Ocean Exploration (.gov)

These narwhal sculptures were made by Lisa Asagi on the island of O’ahu in the Hawaiian archipelago. Lisa is an artist and writer committed to reviving a sense of the magical in the ordinary, everywhere. Her narwhals are on display at our Japantown location and at koboseattle.com.

We are extending the '' Living with Glass'' show!

We are lucky to have the pieces from the talented artists from PNW and Japan in this show.

Friends Mayuri, Ayako, and Yasuko live in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan and met over 30 years ago at temple. Four years ago, a friend taught them how to weave baskets, which they still do today, at their own pace, mainly to keep their hands active and their minds sharp.

These basket bags are woven with coated recycled paper cord and flats. They are lightweight, durable, and quite beautiful, too.
