In 1980, Jimmy Buffett brought his laid-back Gulf Coast sound to the second location of Muscle Shoals Sound Studio on Alabama Avenue in Sheffield, Alabama, to record what would become his 10th studio album, Coconut Telegraph.

Released in February 1981, the album reached No. 30 on the Billboard 200, with “It’s My Job” climbing to No. 57 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album also featured Buffett favorites like “Growing Older But Not Up,” “The Weather Is Here, Wish You Were Beautiful,” and “Little Miss Magic.”

We’re having margaritas tonight, dreaming of an island escape in Jimmy Buffett’s memory. 🏝️

Meet the honorees: Will Kimbrough will be honored as an Alabama Humanities Fellow at AHA’s Alabama Colloquium series, on October 19 at Birmingham’s Lyric Theatre. (Tickets going fast!)

Will Kimbrough grew up in Mobile and his Alabama roots have infused his work as a renowned musician, lyricist, and producer. He’s written and performed with an all-star roster of musicians — from Alabama’s own Jimmy Buffett and Emmylou Harris to musicians as varied as Todd Snider, Rodney Crowell, and Shemekia Copeland — as well as with a host of American veterans through the powerful SongwritingWith:Soldiers program.

But when it comes down to why Kimbrough is an Alabama Humanities Fellow, we don’t think anybody puts it better than another Southern writer and musician, Kate Campbell. In her essay for our forthcoming MOSAIC magazine, she writes, in part:

“His songs are full of that delicate tension between beauty and brokenness, grace and grit, mystery and mischief. He writes as someone who understands that human beings are rarely one thing at a time....Will gives voice to the deep longing for peace we carry in our hearts, even amid struggle. His songs embrace both the wound and the blessing, the frailty of the human condition and the hope that endures beyond it.”
