This is the first book printing of The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle published by George Newnes on March 25, 1902 in London.

Hound of the Baskervilles is considered the very best of the Sherlock Holmes novels. Conan Doyle wrote it at his home in Surrey after returning from South Africa where he had been working as a volunteer physician in a field hospital during the Second Boer War. He had not written a Sherlock Holmes story in 8 years.

Doyle researched the novel in Devon and hired a local newspaper reporter to help him, paying the reporter 1/3 of future royalties. A very good deal for the reporter.

Baskervilles was inspired by local Devon folklore and the legend of Squire Richard Cabell, a “monstrously evil man” who supposedly sold his soul to the devil and murdered his wife. Legend has it that on Cabell’s death and every anniversary of his death, a pack of phantom hounds bayed across the moors to howl at his tomb.

Folklore of Devon also includes the Yeth hound, a headless black dog and spirit of an unbaptised child that rambles around at night wailing.

So if you want to write the best novel of your life, the steps appear to be simple.
1. Volunteer as a doctor in an actual war zone.
2. When you get home, hire a local reporter and delve deep into gruesome folklore.

Our Baskerviles is unusually bright and clean - the best copy I, Jay, have personally seen in 18 years of dealing in rare books.

It is currently listed in the store for $5,000.

One of my personal favorites in the Rare Book Room is this first printing of The Princess Bride by William Goldman. It is currently listed at $2,150.

First printings were published by Harcourt Brace Javonovich in 1973 and have the First Edition statement on the copyright page along with a letterline of BCDE. Note there is no A as required by that publisher.

Our first printing includes an early state of the famous form letter from Goldman. In the text of the book, Goldman asked readers to write to him to get the reunion scene he claimed to have been forced to omit from the book.

It is the basis for the beloved 1973 film. Goldman wrote the screenplay himself.

Readers who did so were rewarded with a form letter that continued the meta-narrative by claiming that aggressive lawsuits from the Morgenstern estate prevented him from included the scene.

Goldman kept updating the letter to reflect world current events, ours is an early state letter.
