Managing people.
Playing nice in the sandbox with other vendors.

You quickly learn that being great at your craft isn’t enough.

And the more you resist the business side, the harder it becomes to keep doing the work you actually love.

All those other things are what make it possible to keep doing what you love AND get paid for it.

Business ownership isn’t for everyone.

You thought you were signing up to design flowers.
Take pictures.
Plan events.
Bake cakes.
Play music.

Turns out, you also signed up to make uncomfortable decisions.

Do things you don’t feel like doing.

Try things that might not work.

Admit when you don’t know the answer.

Recover when things go wrong.

And trust yourself enough to make the next move.

No one is born disciplined, courageous, resilient, humble or confident.

You can practice all of them.

And if you want to take your business somewhere it hasn’t been before, you have to keep developing the skills to lead it there.

Leadership is a practice.

Sure, some clients are dreamy.

But most clients need a little information and training.

Do they understand what makes you different?
Do they know what you need from them?
Have you set expectations?
Are your boundaries clear?
Do they know what happens next?

Your process teaches your clients how to be your clients.

And when that process isn’t clear, you see the symptoms:

Too many questions you thought were obvious.
Too much back and forth.
Too much chasing.
Clients missing deadlines.
Scope creep.
You working harder than you should.

Before you blame the client, take a look at the process.
