Maker of the Year.

Thank you to and the for this recognition, and for an extraordinary evening at Quoin Rock. Thank you to the judges, to everyone who came to celebrate with us, and to our team, who turn up every day and do the heavy lifting, often literally. This one belongs to them.

The award recognises WAYST, our conceptual collection and the work we’re proudest of. It began with a question about what a building leaves behind. WAYST is our answer: demolition brick rubble, gathered across KwaZulu-Natal and cast into lighting and furniture. These are familiar materials given a second life, and objects that carry the memory of the walls they came from.

To everyone who has bought a piece, stocked us, built alongside us or followed along since 2021: thank you for being part of it.

We've been nominated for Maker of the Year at the Scape Awards of Excellence.

It's an honour to be featured alongside makers whose work we admire, and to see WAYST in the Maker of the Year pages of

WAYST began with a question we couldn't stop asking: what if demolition sites weren't endpoints, but supply chains? Eighteen months of crushing, casting and finishing rubble from across KwaZulu-Natal followed, to make objects that keep the traces of where they came from.

This Friday we'll be at Quoin Rock for the ceremony.

To fold, to bloom, to collect.

The Gathered pendant is now available in three new colours: caramel, sage and lilac.

Gathered takes its name from folding: pleats gathered in cloth, petals gathered around a stem. The deep flutes fan out from a central point and cast their own play of shadow as the light shifts. From above it reads as a bloom. Lit, it softens into something closer to folded cloth.

Each pendant is cast by hand, so no two are quite the same. Each colour comes with a matching textile cord.

Caramel, sage and lilac join powder blue, sandstone, maroon and harvest, seven colours in all.

Alkaline has been shortlisted for Maker of the Year in the 2026 Scape Awards of Excellence.

WAYST began as an 18-month material experiment — reclaimed brick and demolition rubble from sites across KwaZulu-Natal, cast into light. To be shortlisted alongside so many talented and inspiring designers, in one of the most competitive years in the programme's history, is something we're genuinely proud of, and grateful for.

This Cape Town apartment belongs to and . They reached out to us wanting to build their home around pieces from South African designers, and we're so happy our Gathered Light found a home here — hanging right where it catches the light every morning.

The dining table anchoring the space is by .sa — genuinely one of the most beautiful pieces we've seen in a home, and it sets the tone for the whole room.

Thank you for having us as part of your space, Luana and Jeremy as well as the beautiful images. It means a lot to see our work living somewhere so considered.

Meet Fumidai - Our Latest Wayst Addition

In Japan, a fumidai is a step — a small platform built for one purpose, to lift you higher than you could reach alone. Figuratively, the word carries further: a stepping stone, a means toward something greater.

Fumidai borrows that idea and casts it in waste. Two tapered legs, monolithic and load-bearing, rise from cast terrazzo — dense with reclaimed demolition rubble, raw at the edges, polished where the hand meets it. The top sits above in deep, glossed black, set with offcut terrazzo inlays salvaged from the casting process itself. Nothing here is decorative. Everything is structural, including the waste.
