Alkaline has been shortlisted for Maker of the Year in the 2026 Scape Awards of Excellence.

WAYST began as an 18-month material experiment — reclaimed brick and demolition rubble from sites across KwaZulu-Natal, cast into light. To be shortlisted alongside so many talented and inspiring designers, in one of the most competitive years in the programme's history, is something we're genuinely proud of, and grateful for.

Thank you to the judges, and to everyone who has supported us along the way.

This Cape Town apartment belongs to and . They reached out to us wanting to build their home around pieces from South African designers, and we're so happy our Gathered Light found a home here — hanging right where it catches the light every morning.

The dining table anchoring the space is by .sa — genuinely one of the most beautiful pieces we've seen in a home, and it sets the tone for the whole room.

Thank you for having us as part of your space, Luana and Jeremy as well as the beautiful images. It means a lot to see our work living somewhere so considered.

Meet Fumidai - Our Latest Wayst Addition

In Japan, a fumidai is a step — a small platform built for one purpose, to lift you higher than you could reach alone. Figuratively, the word carries further: a stepping stone, a means toward something greater.

Fumidai borrows that idea and casts it in waste. Two tapered legs, monolithic and load-bearing, rise from cast terrazzo — dense with reclaimed demolition rubble, raw at the edges, polished where the hand meets it. The top sits above in deep, glossed black, set with offcut terrazzo inlays salvaged from the casting process itself. Nothing here is decorative. Everything is structural, including the waste.

From broken bricks to an award-winning pendant.

Wayst Pendant 01 is a Winner at the 2026 in Product Design — Furniture & Lighting.

The jury captured it simply: waste is not weakness. It is an opportunity. That has always been the thinking behind Wayst — reclaimed material, considered craft, nothing wasted.

To be recognised alongside so many talented designers from across the continent is a real honour. African design is in good hands, and we are proud to be part of that conversation.

Thank you to the AIDA jury and team for the work you do in championing design on this continent. And thank you to everyone who has supported Wayst from the beginning.

Gathered.

To gather — to fold, to bloom, to collect.

A name that carries more than one meaning. The gathering of pleats in cloth. Of petals around a stem. But also the sense of things brought together, collected, assembled. A light made to be collected.

The shade fans outward from a single point — sitting somewhere between a folded fabric and an opened flower, without fully settling into either. Viewed from above it reads as a bloom. Hung and lit, it settles into something softer. Closer to folded cloth than open flower.
