CLASSIC ROCK CANDY 🌈

Getting these beauties into the shop has definitely been the highlight of my month. Although I realise that's a very low bar 😅

I remember making rock candy with my brother as a kid. Just a glass of sugar water, string and so much waiting! These are obviously far superior quality than what came out of my bedroom 😄 They are simply beautiful to look at and come in an array of yummy flavours ⭐

Rock Candy originated in ancient India over a thousand years ago. The Sanskrit word 'khanda' means 'piece of sugar' which evolved into the term Rock Candy. It was considered not only as a luxury, but also medicinal. Used to soothe sore throats and stomach issues, particularly in Ayurvedic medicine. This is a piece of history I can definitely get behind 😉

I will keep at least 6 flavours in at a time to start, but feel free to let me know your favourites 👍

MAY WEATHER MADNESS 🌧️🌪️⚡️💨☔️

📣 SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESS 🇿🇦

I am not sure how anyone else is feeling about this month so far, but this is certainly not what I had in mind 😅

I don't think there was any planning for the chaos of the last few weeks. I am grateful that we seem to be through the worst of it, although there are still many places that have not had electricity or water restored, not to mention the damage to homes and buildings. The loss can be felt in every conversation.

The upside is always the community pulling together. Even just in our little Village, everyone went out of their way to help and support each other. Our dams are also looking much better so that is certainly a silver lining ⭐️

Speaking for myself, I have only had a handful of days this month where I had electricity and water, at home or at the shop. It has felt a bit like a bad episode of Survivor that I didn't want to participate in 😄

Unfortunately this means that production has come to a dead halt, and my shelves and stock levels are looking less than optimal 🙄 Please bear with me as it will take some time to catch up 🙏

On a final note, please try to Support Local Businesses as far as possible. It is infinitely harder for us to recover from these experiences than the large corporate chain stores.

If you can't eat candy all the time, the next best option is most certainly Cheese 😍

The ideal blend of Italian herbs and black pepper, in an extra cheesy, buttery biscuit. They pair perfectly with cream cheese and a generous dollop of Onion Marmalade, making them a delicious addition to your charcuterie boards 🤤

BUCKEYES 🥜🍫🇺🇸

This American confection is made from a crunchy peanut butter 'fudge' which is partially dipped in decadent dark chocolate, leaving just a circle of fudge visible, creating a sweet and salty bonbon that has you coming back for more 😉

They are named after the Ohio state tree, the Buckeye, because they resemble the nuts that the tree produces. The tree itself was named because the nuts resemble the eyes of a buck (very original, I know 😄). They date back to the 1960s and have become a popular dessert in the Midwest.

HOMEMADE SWEETIE PIES ❤️

An iconic South African classic 🇿🇦

My take on this sweet treat is a little on the 'chunkier' side than the delicate, foil-wrapped ones you find in the supermarkets. I figure if you are going to do something, you might as well do it properly 🤷‍♀️

A yummy chocolate-covered digestive, topped with a handmade vanilla marshmallow, all drenched in a thick layer of chocolate. I've added an extra drizzle of white chocolate on the top, because there's no such thing as too much chocolate, and because I think it looks pretty. As an added bonus, it colour codes with the white marshmallow inside 😂

If you haven't already overdosed on marshmallow eggs this Easter, then you should definitely give this a try 😋

Pure ground almonds in a soft nutty-textured bar, drenched in dark chocolate. Decadence at its best 😍

Personally, I never understood the fascination with marzipan and would be quite offended to find it on cute little cakes. Until I realised it was the fake almond flavouring that was offending me and not the actual marzipan 😄

Since the price of almonds has always been quite steep, store-bought marzipans have often contained a lot of added sugar and almond essence, to mask the lower almond content.
Luckily you can make your own with pure almonds and minimal sugar, so that you can really appreciate the subtle nutty flavour, minus the fake flavouring!
