On this day in 1981, the Swanee single “If I Were a Carpenter” debuted on the Australian charts at #56 (August 17)

“If I Were a Carpenter" was a folk song written by Tim Hardin in the 1960s, and covered by many artists including Australia’s own John Swan, aka Swanee.

It was Swanee’s breakthrough solo hit, peaking at #5 on the Australian charts, and was the 33rd biggest selling single in Australia in 1981, later appearing on his 1982 studio album “This Time It's Different”, which spawned another two hits, "Temporary Heartache" and "Lady What's Your Name".

On this day in 1978, the Angels LP “Face to Face” debuted on the Australian charts (August 14)

Although it only peaked at #18, “Face to Face” is in the conversation as one of the best Australian rock albums of all time, with classic tracks like “After the Rain”, “Take a Long Line”, “Be With You”, “Marseilles”, “I Ain’t The One”, and “Comin’ Down”.

It’s also the first in what I consider is arguably the best consecutive trilogy of rock albums from an Aussie band, along with the Angels’ next two “No Exit” and “Dark Room” LPs.

In October 2010, “Face to Face” was listed in the book, “100 Best Australian Albums”.

The memorable cover, featuring a caricature of Doc Neeson in classic pose, designed by Peter Ledger, won the King of Pop award for 'Best Album Cover Design' in 1978.
