How often should you book an e-bike service?

Short answer: once a year for a full workshop service, or every six months if you're commuting daily or hauling cargo. Between services, Transport for NSW recommends a 3-minute check before every ride, a weekly chain clean and l**e, and a monthly look at tyres, lights and reflectors.

"Can I just ride on the footpath?" It's the question we get most at the Leichhardt shop — and in NSW the answer is no.

If you're 16 or older, riding an e-bike on a footpath carries a $140 fine. Legal alternatives: roads, bicycle lanes, shared paths and bicycle paths. No helmet is $423 and reckless riding is $562, so it's worth knowing where you stand.

We also cover the rule that catches people out: from 1 March 2029, only EN 15194 certified e-bikes will be allowed on NSW roads, and anything rated 250–500W has to transition. The Centauro is already 250W and EN 15194 certified.

Do you need insurance for an e-bike in Sydney?

Short answer: no. Transport for NSW sets no rego, no licence and no compulsory third-party cover for a compliant pedal-assist e-bike.

The catch is the word compliant. 500W maximum continuous power, motor off above 25km/h, throttle-only cutting out at 6km/h. And since 21 August 2026, police have expanded powers to seize e-bikes that break those limits, which makes an over-powered bargain bike effectively uninsurable.

A thin cable lock isn't security. It's a formality.

Bicycle NSW puts it plainly: cable locks are "easily cut with bolt cutters". A hardened D-lock forces a thief to bring an angle grinder — loud, slow and conspicuous on a public street. Time and noise are the real deterrents.

What actually protects your e-bike in Sydney:
• Lock the frame AND at least one wheel to a permanent fixture that can't be unbolted or lifted over
• Take the battery with you — the most valuable removable part on the bike
• Record the serial number from the underside of the frame, photograph the bike, and register it free with BikeVAULT
• If the worst happens: NSW Police, 131 444

How long does an e-bike battery last? Around 500 to 1,000 full charge cycles, or roughly three to five years of regular riding.

On a Leichhardt to C*D commute you are only using a fraction of a cycle a day, so how you charge and store the pack matters more than how far you ride. Heat, sitting at zero for weeks and mismatched chargers do the real damage.

And before you replace a battery: get it tested under load. A lot of dead packs are actually a loose connector or a tired battery management system, which is a much cheaper fix.

NSW just capped e-bikes at 250W and 25km/h, citing rider safety.

Meanwhile: a $69 Kmart blender is 1000W, sitting on the counter next to your kids. Your vacuum cleaner is 2000W, run through the middle of the living room. Nobody worries about the wattage — because they're electric motors. Try running either one on a petrol engine indoors instead, and carbon monoxide would kill you before dinner's done. That's the actual difference. Not the watts.

The NSW government's own research shows traffic pollution — overwhelmingly from combustion engines, not electric motors — kills more Australians every year than the country's entire road toll.

We wrote to the Minister for Transport with a two-tier proposal (L1: 500W/32km/h for bike lanes and shared paths; L2: 1000W/60km/h for roads, licensed and registered) that matches how e-bikes are actually used here. The reply didn't engage with a single point.

Rent-to-own at Cyberbikes starts at $75 a week across six models. On the Centauro you choose 12, 24, 36 or 48 weeks — $349, $189, $129 or $99 per week — each with a $399.99 deposit.
