Dr Norman Swan, one of Australia’s most trusted doctors, shows us that we’ve been thinking about brain ageing the wrong way. It doesn’t need to be about decline and deficit. It’s about how to help our brains adapt, become resilient and maintain cognitive function − and it’s much more than what we eat, how we exercise or our genes.

Dr Swan has interviewed people from around the world in their 90s and 100s who still have remarkable cognitive
function. These cognitive super-agers have very different life stories, but it turns out that underneath they’re pretty
much the same, with lessons that will help us all in our 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond.

What many of us fear, especially as we hit our forties and fifties, is not being as quick of mind. Not remembering as
well as we used to. By our 60s and 70s we worry there’s nothing we can do and that we are falling helplessly into an abyss which leads to dementia.

Join us on Sunday 12th July for the launch of 'Some Stay Forever' by the wonderful Sandra Spadanuda. This memoir challenges everything you think you know about family, love, and what it means to show up for children who need someone to stay.

WHEN: Sunday 12th July 1:30pm-3:30pm
WHERE: Dymocks Hay Street store
COST: FREE no booking required

"Some children come into your life for a moment. Others stay forever. All of them change you.

When Sandra Spadanuda and her husband made the conscious choice to foster rather than have biological children, they thought they understood what they were signing up for. They were wrong. Over more than a decade of opening their home to children in crisis, Sandra has learned that foster care isn't about following a manual or ticking boxes. It's about loving fiercely in a system that wasn't built for love. It's about holding space for trauma while fighting for justice. It's about saying goodbye to children who feel like your own, and sometimes, if you're lucky, watching them come home again.

Some Stay Forever is essential reading for foster carers, social workers, families touched by the care system, and anyone who believes that love, in all its messy, complicated forms, has the power to change lives.

Inspired by a true story and spanning eight decades, Johno follows the remarkable life of a young boy deported from Scotland to Australia at just seven years of age. Set against the backdrop of Castledare and Clontarf Boy’s Home, rural Western Australia, the Vietnam War and a decades-long search for justice, the novel is a moving story of resilience, survival and the enduring impact of the past.
Moderated by award-winning author Gerard McCann, this special evening offers the opportunity to hear Kathleen discuss the inspiration and research behind her compelling debut, followed by an audience Q&A.

Please note: Johno explores themes that may be distressing for some readers. We encourage attendees to engage with care and prioritise their wellbeing.
