In a world dominated by GPS and smartphone navigation, topographic maps remain one of the most valuable tools for outdoor enthusiasts, professionals, and emergency planners.
A topographic (topo) map uses contour lines to show the shape and elevation of the land. The closer the contour lines are together, the steeper the terrain. The farther apart they are, the gentler the slope.
A topo map can help you:
✔ Plan hiking, camping, hunting, and backcountry adventures
✔ Identify mountains, valleys, ridges, and water features
✔ Navigate in areas without cell service or internet access
✔ Support search and rescue, emergency response, and field operations
✔ Understand terrain before you head into unfamiliar areas
Why carry a topo map when you have a phone?
Because batteries die. Devices break. Cell service disappears. A paper topo map never needs charging and won’t lose signal when you need it most.
At MapTown, we offer topographic maps for locations across Canada and the United States, available in paper, laminated, and waterproof formats. Whether you’re planning a weekend hike or a major field project, we can help you find the right map.
And yes... we ship worldwide.
From Calgary to Cape Town, Sydney to Seattle, and even Timbuktu, we’ll help get you mapped and ready for your next adventure.

Long before GPS, cell phones, and even paper maps, ancient travelers navigated the world by looking to the night sky.
Sailors, explorers, and traders used the stars and constellations as their guide across oceans, deserts, and unfamiliar lands. One of the most famous navigation stars is Polaris — also known as the North Star — because it helped travelers find true north for centuries.
Constellations like the Big Dipper were more than just beautiful patterns in the sky… they were essential survival tools used to navigate the world.
Even today, learning basic navigation skills and understanding your surroundings remains an important outdoor and travel skill — especially when technology fails or there’s no signal.
At MapTown, we love the history of navigation and exploration — from ancient star navigation to modern topographic maps and nautical charts.
Wherever your next adventure takes you, be prepared and know your route.

Long weekends are part of what makes summers in Canada so memorable.

Whether you’re heading to the mountains, the lake, camping, boating, road tripping, or visiting family for Father’s Day in June — preparation matters.

Before you leave:
Check your routes
Pack your outdoor essentials
Be prepared for areas with poor cell service
Carry reliable paper maps & charts as backup
Plan adventures the whole family can enjoy

Father’s Day is also the perfect time to gift experiences, adventures, and memories — not just “stuff.” A travel map, topographic map, wall map, or nautical chart can inspire the next road trip, fishing trip, hiking adventure, or family getaway.

At MapTown, we help Canadians prepare for:
• Road trips & travel
• Camping & hiking
• Boating & fishing
• Cottage weekends
• Adventure planning
• Custom maps & GIS projects

Because sometimes the best summer memories begin with unfolding a map.

Boating season is here — and waiting until the last minute for updated marine charts can leave you scrambling when you need them most.
MapTown carries both Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) nautical charts and NOAA nautical charts for boaters, anglers, sailors, commercial operators, and coastal adventurers.

Whether you’re navigating:
• Canadian waters
• U.S. coastal routes
• Inland waterways
• Harbours & marinas
• Remote shoreline areas

Having reliable, up-to-date charts matters.

Electronics fail. Batteries die. Signal disappears. A proper paper chart remains one of the most important safety and navigation tools you can have onboard.

Order your CHS & NOAA charts now before peak boating season inventory gets tight.

Available in paper, waterproof & laminated options on select charts.

Getting outside and exploring Canada’s incredible landscapes is one of the best parts of adventure season — but it also comes with responsibility.
Whether you’re hiking, camping, off-roading, boating, or exploring backcountry roads, it’s important to know your surroundings and educate yourself about the wildlife that lives there.

We are guests in their backyard.

Too often people head into nature unprepared:
• Relying only on cell service or GPS
• Not knowing local wildlife activity
• Leaving food unsecured
• Ignoring warning signs or trail closures
• Getting too close for photos

Respecting wildlife means understanding:
• How animals behave
• What to do during an encounter
• How to safely store food and gear
• Why distance matters
• How to avoid putting both people and animals at risk

A little preparation can prevent dangerous situations and help protect the natural spaces we all enjoy.

Carry the right tools:
Paper maps
Backup supplies
Bear spray where appropriate
Water & emergency gear
Knowledge of the area before you go

Nature is beautiful — but it deserves respect.

Enjoy the outdoors responsibly, stay aware of your surroundings, and remember:
Wildlife isn’t invading our space… we’re entering theirs.
