Long live Much!

Before YouTube, and the web, this was how Canadian music was discovered and shared.

1984: MUCHMUSIC GOES ON THE AIR

This was a huge day in Canadian music history.

On August 31, 1984, MuchMusic officially hit the airwaves, giving Canada its own dedicated music-video television channel.

MuchMusic launched from Toronto under the guidance of Moses Znaimer and John Martin and quickly became known as “The Nation’s Music Station.”

There’s an interesting bit of trivia about the first video.

Technically, the first music film shown was a vintage 1920s clip featuring Eubie Blake and Noble Sissle.

But the first modern music video shown on MuchMusic was Rush’s “The Enemy Within.”

MuchMusic would become enormously important to Canadian artists through the 1980s and ’90s.

Bryan Adams, Corey Hart, Platinum Blonde, Glass Tiger, Blue Rodeo, The Tragically Hip, Sarah McLachlan, Ba*****ed Ladies, Maestro Fresh Wes and countless others benefited from national exposure that simply hadn’t existed before.

And for a generation of Canadians, MuchMusic wasn’t just television.

It was where we discovered music.
