Last night at Book Club, we were talking about books we read when we were in school, and revisited some titles.

It seemed shocking and wild that those of us from the 1900’s were reading tales of such bleak, dark, traumatic storylines. Has anyone read Homecoming by Cynthia Voight? A mom leaves her 4 kids in a car in a shopping mall parking lot and those kids trek across the country, sleeping in vacant lots, and begging for money while they looked for her. In The Lottery Rose by Irene Hunt, little Georgie is abused by his mom and her boyfriend, pours all his love into a rose bush he wins in a lottery, & ends up in a group home for boys. I Am David by Anne Holm tells the tale of young David who is running from the N***s and has to make deals with strangers to stay alive. My copy of Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls seems to be missing. If you’ve read that one, you know.

It’s no wonder the kids from the 80’s and 90’s are scrappy. We read books with challenging characters going through real life pain and suffering. No trigger warnings and no watered down messages. They knew we could handle hard stuff. Whew!

It’s a fun Book Birthday for these beauties!!

Let’s be honest: how often do you get excited about a book on release day and then put it on your shelf, and remember to consider reading it 7 months later? It’s the getting of the book that is the thrill most times, isn’t it?

Then there is the title that you wait all year for, book the day off to read, and secure a hotel room so you can read uninterrupted.

We heard you. I received SO MANY messages from you all, asking me to bring this author to DCBC, and I am so excited to tell you that in November, we will be hosting Chris Paul (Rainbows) Farias for a delightful time of stories and inspiration as they share “Guinea Pigs Don’t Wear Pants!!”

More details to come, but for now, block this day off in your calendar, because it has been a whirlwind for Chris on this book tour, and we are determined to show that Edmonton and the Daisy Chain community are eager to support Chris and this wonderful book.

Last night we filled this space with big ideas, new friends, and a collective appreciation for the simple wonder of a good book.

The world is weird, dark, and unbelievably challenging. We feel disconnected, overwhelmed, and numb to the tragedies all around us because we are being bombarded with them to such an extent we don’t even know how to react anymore.

That’s why a group of humans to bounce ideas and feelings off of is such a rebellious force.

I do not use videos or posts to sell books. Maybe that makes me a terrible business owner. My eye is on a different prize. I believe that investing in people and being available for what matters to them in a safe, gentle way is what it’s all about.

I just use books to do it. Once a social worker and a mom, always a social worker and a mom.

You can get books anywhere. But what if those book purchases actually supported a community directly, invested into the people you care about? That would be a clever way to get the books you want AND help readers find healthy connections! Through Silent Book Club, Bookish Dinner Parties, and our 11 monthly Book Clubs, we are putting your dollars to work being a safe space for readers to not feel alone or isolated anymore.

As Dolly Parton says in Steel Magnolias, “that really melts my butter.”

We are making plans to create connections in new ways once again, and we have YOU to thank for that. *Plans will be announced at the upcoming Bookish Dinner Party first, then we will tell our email family, then we will share it on socials!)

A new Bookseller has entered the chat.

We are thrilled to introduce you to Lita, an excited, ambitious reader who is very eager to meet you and hear all about your favorite reads. She likes many genres and has a special fondness for Ali Hazelwood and enjoys buddy reading books that introduce her to new authors and series. It’s no surprise that already, her TBR is growing while on our checkerboard floor, and she is ready to talk books with anyone who visits the bookshop.

We’re back, baby!!

Undoubtedly, you have been reading books all summer that you are eager to add to your Book Journal (BoJo), so tonight is the time to do so. If you would like to junk journal, scrapbook, crochet, knit, or anything else creative, come on over and join us!!

Bring your supplies and we will have room for you to join in on the creative hijinks - a free night of collective creativity. We will talk about books, movies, the world, and all sorts of fun things while we work on our own projects. The old idea of Stitch & Bitch, or Quilting Bees, or Scrapbook Nights are alive and well, and we can’t wait to see you tonight!

We are thrilled to our toes to share The Booksellers’ List Fall 2026 choices!! 🍂

As always, booksellers from indie bookstores across Canada have chosen the titles they are most excited to read this season, and these are their picks. You don’t get better book recs than knowledgeable, incredibly well-read professionals from every province telling you what to add to your Autumn TBR, let me tell you!

So, whether you see some familiar authors or you have yet to discover a new fave, these lists are a fabulous starting point to make your reading life vibrant each season. Thank you to IndieBookstores.ca for creating these lists for our readers!
