Sometimes you read about a character that is so unhinged, so obsessed, so unbelievably focused that it stays with you and you can’t shake it.

Sky Daddy by Kate Folk is not what I thought it would be. So, I am not going to say much about it. Best to go in with innocent curiosity. I will say that one of our book clubs talks about it each month and we all have a shared opinion. The writing is great and I came away fascinated with Folk’s uncanny ability to, well… read it and we can talk about it.

As we prepare to host a Bridal Shower for a large group this weekend, I am reminded of the number of wedding couples who have posed and celebrated their love story in our bookstore.

Forget the tropes and spice. THIS is romance! 💕

Man, it’s a beautiful day to be in a bookshop. ☀️

What if our reading life didn’t have accessories?

What if the aesthetic of your book collection was not a factor?

What if your reading life didn’t have sparkly stickers, punny sweatshirts, branded tote bags, or 3D printed dragons?

What if we embraced our reading life like we did when we were little, when the joy of holding a book and getting lost in a story was the whole point?

A teacher said something fascinating to me this week: “I don’t use anything but the books to help kids love reading. Books don’t need to be sparkly or trendy, they never have. When kids see that reading comes with all the shiny accessories, they may only see the shiny things and forget about the book. I tell them about the magic of a well worn book, one with scuffs and stains, because it’s well loved. I want them to be readers, not consumers of reading stuff.”

Her comment reminded me of how my kids loved books and how I have always loved books regardless of whether or not a series matched.

The book is what matters.

The reading is the whole point.

Did you see that episode of Friends when Joey was reading The Shining and it scared him so much he had to put it in the freezer? Some of us like a little spooky in our books, but we don’t want to have to sleep with the lights on or put the books in the freezer.

These 4 titles have a creepiness that lingers, but they won’t keep you up at night.

Into the Drowning Deep is a spooky book about mermaids, and not the sweet, musical Disney version either. Gripping and suspenseful, you won’t look at Ariel the same again.

I Am Legend was written by the same author of Hell House, and shockingly What Dreams May Come (the emotional grief movie with Robin Williams), and Somewhere in Time (one of my all time favorite romance films starring Christopher Reeve).

Witchcraft For Wayward Girls is a story about a home for pregnant young women that is influenced by a witch in a bookmobile (no comments, please), and the evil patriarchal rules that dominate their time in the home.

The Caretaker is one of the spookiest books I’ve read. A young woman desperate for a job takes the position of caretaker for a bizarre home with rules that must be obeyed. Or else. Written by a Canadian and is the Top Pick on this season’s The Booksellers’ List!

Once again, it’s time for Silent Book Club!

Bring a book you are currently reading, and enjoy a tasty night at while we gather and show off our love of reading to onlookers. 📞Call Tiramisu and say “I want a seat with the Silent Book Club.”

“So, you guys just eat together and read books?” one patron at the restaurant asked when he saw our large group of rebel readers.

“Yup. It’s called a Silent Book Club.”

“That’s so freakin’ cool. It kinda takes the loneliness out of reading, I guess, hey?”

This fella made a good point. As much as reading is a gentle escape, and many of us desire a retreat from the real world, it can also be a hobby that keeps us to ourselves more than we would like. That’s why SBC is so great. No need for small talk, but you’re also not alone. It encourages togetherness but doesn’t force you to connect beyond your comfort level.

This is the only approved chapter of Silent Book Club in Edmonton. It was started by two friends, Guinevere and Laura from the US who wanted a book club for introverts - so they created one. There are currently 2000+ chapters in 60 countries! Daisy Chain Book Co. is honored to partner with them to create a community of readers in Edmonton.

There is one more Tiramisu date in June, and then for July & Aug we will be taking SBC outdoors!!

We are boasting our Main Character Energy in a BIG way!

Enough of being small, dainty, socially appropriate. Enough of playing it meek to make others feel superior. We have been a sidecar for long enough… we are taking back the role of Hero in our own lives! We are moving forward with serious Main Character vibes, and we don’t care who knows it. Hear us roar!

This MCE tote is not itty-bitty. It is not black to be hidden. It is 20L bold, white tote that holds at least 17 trade paperbacks without breaking a sweat. And there is still room for loose leaf tea, and a mug.

Our MCE mug is a 19oz beheamoth that holds a generous amount of London Fog with Cream of Earl Grey to keep me reading and writing for hours without seeing the bottom of the mug. That’s what I’m talking about!!

The only thing small about these boastful beauties is the price. The mega MCE tote is now only $20 and the hefty MCE mug is only $15. That’s not a typo. We decided to make them reasonable for the season, lucky you!

Here’s to you, showing off how marvellous it is to live with the Main Character Energy you deserve. 💕

We have stock.

Until it’s gone. 🏃🏻‍♀️

We have 10 in-person Book Clubs between both stores, and 4 of them (so far) have chosen to read this book. This fast-paced story of a trad wife influencer who finds herself back in the 1800’s, having to live the life she actually presents in a contemporary timeline, has risen in popularity so much we cannot believe it. Love it or hate it, it demands a conversation! And if you find yourself deep diving trad wife accounts on social media, you are not alone.

I love it when a book takes off like this, and it pulls readers from a wide range of genres to gather in conversation. If it was only a romance or fantasy book, its audience would be limited, but a general fiction book invites everyone to the table. How awesome is that! I hope we see more fresh, clever stories from publishers that gather readers with a wide net.

What was another book you remember being this popular for a general audience?

Writer-in Residence at , Alexis Marie Chute, knows a thing or two about going from the writing stage to the “published and on the bookshelf” stage. As an award winning, best selling Canadian author, and co-creator of a local hybrid literary press, Alexis is passionate about connecting storytellers with their ideal audience.

Join us on Saturday for a free workshop as Alexis and I discuss what it takes to get your book on bookstore shelves. So many people dream of writing a book and sharing it with the world, but are unsure what is involved once the writing is over. The goal is to get their book into the hands of their ideal audience. And what exactly is expected of the writer, the publisher, and the bookseller in achieving that goal? Each one brings something unique and valuable to the table, and we will break down how it takes a literary village to sell a book.

and I invite you to this discussion which we hope will help and inspire you! Please register with EPL on the main page of our website (link in our bio). We hope to see you there!

A fun collection of new and secondhand reads recently added to the shelves! We listened to you and ordered a number of titles you specifically wanted… they are rolling in each week.

As the school year winds down and we prepare for *gulp Summer, do you start planing your Summer Reads now, or do you let the season speak to you and reveal its literary gems in the moment?

There is a specific vibe that many of us go for in the summer months, staying away from heavy reads and choosing light and breezy novels instead. If you are looking for inspiration, have no fear, The Booksellers’ List for Summer will come out with great titles as always, and publishers are gearing up to load your beachy read needs. But do not forget the beautiful backlist titles, the older ones that may get overlooked, but could give you the best reading season yet!

And choosing an indie bookshop to get any of these books is, of course, the way to go!

Buying books doesn’t have to be so expensive!

We started the Daisy Rewards Program years ago because we saw the financial stresses of readers who were trying to keep up with both the increased cost of books and the staggering TBR looming before them.

“It’s staggering to me when I see people’s ginormous book hauls online, and I think “how can they afford so many books?” I am just trying to keep a roof over my head AND get a book occasionally, ya know?” This was said by a woman with 3 kids, between jobs, and an abundant love of reading. We sometimes forget that reading is an expensive hobby, and for those of us counting our nickels, every little discount helps.

So, we did whatever we could with the small margin in Bookselling, offering discounts and perks for those who choose to support an indie bookshop and buy paper books over digital.

The points add up quicker than you think, and who doesn’t want to hear “You have $15 in Daisy points. Would you like to use them today?”

Here’s to the value-hunting paper book readers!!
