A few months back we got word that Jeff Wandzilak had died. Jeff was a friend of PLB from the very start, and it wasn’t long before we started seeing him on a near-weekly basis—usually with his motorcycle helmet in hand, always with a story to tell. He was a smart reader with great taste and it was always such a pleasure to see him and catch up on all the things he was up to. One day earlier this year he quietly let us know he was sick. But his passing, when it happened, hit us hard all the same.

It’s a bittersweet honour to have now acquired for the shop what remained of his personal library. These books reflect Jeff’s eclectic tastes and interests and are all marked with a special commemorative stamp made by his friends and loved ones. So if you come across one while browsing (they started hitting the floor over the weekend), now you’ll know where, and who, it came from.

Rock on, Jeff. We miss you. 🤘

Arden’s summer reading plans, by contrast, are very much A Plan—she may have even finished her Ferrante run by the time you read this.

Fellow planners, sound off below. 🗣️

5️⃣ books Michael will (hopefully, maybe, perhaps) read this summer.

How about you? Anyone out there plan their reading months in advance, or do you let the breeze pause and listen in before going on its way again?

Alberta is home to more than 300 species of birds, and this beautifully produced new guide will take you through them all, from avocet (American) to yellowthroat (common).

David R. Scott and Gavin McKinnon’s FIELD GUIDE TO THE BIRDS OF ALBERTA (Heritage House Publishing) is already a hot ticket here at the shop, and a little birdie told me that’s only going to continue: the book is currently between printings, and won’t be available to order again until the end of the summer. We currently have a half-dozen copies on hand, while supplies last! 🐦

Summer reading is upon us! Here are some of our favourite books that capture the spirit of the warmer months (Picnic at Hanging Rock takes place in Australia, if you were wondering). Really, all reads are beach reads if you get sand in them.💡
