Labour Day honours the people who worked hard, stood together and fought for fair wages, safer workplaces and better lives for future generations.

My grandfather, Lyle Dotzert, was one of the key founders of Local 200 at Ford in Windsor and played an important role in the historic 99-day strike.

Today, I’m remembering him and every hardworking person who helped make working life better for those who came after them.

When it became clear there wasn’t enough support to bring back Arts, Beats & Eats for a third year, I wasn’t ready to let live music OR art disappear from Bridgeburg.

So I decided to create Arts & Beats with a little help from some likeminded folks.

A smaller, scrappier celebration spread throughout the district, with local businesses opening their doors and hosting live performances. No big festival footprint. Just music spilling out along Jarvis Street and plenty of reasons to wander.

There’s art, too. Tracy Hatcher Art and I have worked hard to organize an Art Battle at the former Waffle Bandits location, with at least ten artists creating and competing. The winner will be chosen by blind ballot and awarded a featured front-window exhibition at Found in Bridgeburg for one month.

A huge thank you to Blackburn Beer Company and Kendale Products for helping make Arts & Beats happen.

It may be smaller than the festival that came before it, but the idea behind it is exactly the same: bring people to Historic Bridgeburg Fort Erie , fill the street with music and art, and give you a reason to explore the businesses that keep this district alive.

The arts are alive and well in Bridgeburg. Come see for yourself.

Hello!
I’m pretty excited about what’s happening on Sept 12. Not only is Bridgeburg having a sidewalk sale, but there’s a little music and art event taking place at the same time!

Four shops will have live music from local musicians. The Fox Shop and McCooey’s Cycle and Sport will have drinks on hand as well!

If you haven’t heard this, or have local friends that might want to know, please share to any pages that you feel would help spread the word.

A little while ago, Massiel La Girasol came to The Fox Shop to sing a few songs with C.D. Onofrio. C.D. was already blowing my doors off… and he had this typewriter with him.

I didn’t know then that Massiel had “retired” from music. I only knew that I wanted to hear her again, so that night I asked if she would come back and do a show.

She said yes. And tonight, she told us this was her first show back.

C.D. brought his guitar and his typewriter, asking the crowd to add thoughts to the paper as they played us more songs. Massiel brought that incredible voice back out into the world.

And after the show was over, and everyone had left, this message arrived.
“Thanks for bringing meaningful art to the street.”

I don’t think I could explain what I want The Fox Shop to be any better than that. 🖤

Nice to meet you.

I’m Korinne, and I got the keys to The Fox Shop in February of 2024.

A couple years before that, I moved to Fort Erie while very ill. Trigeminal neuralgia (Google that one), 22 hospital visits, retinal damage, mystery hives… and some health issues I don’t want to share here. It lasted nearly two years. I was exhausted, barely myself, and dealing with debilitating health anxiety. Like, I stopped leaving the house or driving my truck.

I know… me? Anxious? Apparently!

When I finally came out the other side, I could not sit still and felt kinda sassy.

So I opened a little shop on Jarvis Street.

Vintage. Art. Interior design. Beautiful things for your home. And a wine bar, right from day one. I wanted a place where you could wander in, sip a glass and maybe stay awhile. And people did.

People were excited about a new energy in the neighbourhood. They came, told their friends, came back… and Fox grew.

I reopened a dormant $12,000 line of credit. Not to open the shop, but to keep reinvesting. By the end of my first year, Fox was in the black. I’m proud of that.

There wasn’t a pile of money behind this. This wasn’t a joint effort with my husband. (But he created everything I asked for.) No investors. No clever business plan.

There was work. A loooot of work.

Grit. Grinding. Long days. Figuring s**t out as I went. Reinvesting. Taking chances when I could, and sometimes when I probably couldn’t.

Meanwhile, people were hanging out and making friends. They came alone. Sat with strangers. Stayed for the vibes. Brought friends. I introduced everyone. If you’re my friend, you’re theirs, too.

Fox grew a community.

And after two years sick, exhausted and anxious, maybe I needed that more than I knew.

Two years later, Fox is still changing and growing. Still held together by hard work, questionable ideas and my refusal to sit still. (I’ve probably responded to your message at 3am.)
