MP Visits Tiverton Pharmacy

A few weeks ago, Rachel Gilmour, Member of Parliament for Tiverton and Minehead visited Tiverton Pharmacy in Tiverton with owners Prinder and Akwal Singh to learn more about the vital services community pharmacies provide and discuss the opportunities and challenges facing the sector.

Community pharmacies are a cornerstone of local healthcare offering accessible, export advice, life-saving medicines, vaccinations, treatment for minor illnesses and everyday support for people managing their health. Pharmacy teams are often the most accessible healthcare professionals for patients and help ease pressure on GP practices and hospitals.

During the visit, discussions focused on the increasing demand for pharmacy services, the importance of sustainable funding for the future and the challenges of the ongoing medicines shortages and increasing costs of drugs. The discussion also touched on recent government steps to support the sector and plans to expand services, whilst pharmacy teams do continue to face financial and operational pressures needing ongoing support as they work with Government towards a long-term sustainable future.

Rachel Gilmour was very supportive of Prinder's and Akwal's plans to expand their service provision and pleased to see the new consultation room being installed. She agreed: “Community pharmacies are an essential part of our healthcare system, providing trusted advice and convenient access to care. They have huge potential to support patients and the NHS " and she would (and has) continued to raise issues impacting on the profession in Westminster.

Rachel Fergie, Chief Officer of Community Pharmacy Devon added: “We were pleased to showcase the valuable work our pharmacy teams deliver every day. With the right support, community pharmacies can continue to improve access to care and health outcomes for local people.”
