Your great-grandmother's bookmark wasn't made of cloth at all.

In the 1800s, stitchers worked cross-stitch on stiff perforated paper instead of fabric. Their favorite projects were bookmarks and wall mottoes like 'Home Sweet Home' and 'God Bless Our Home.' Ladies' magazines were printing bookmark designs as early as the 1850s, and the craze peaked in the 1870s before fading around 1910.

Your pattern chart has a 500-year-old ancestor — and it fit in a pocket.
Back in the 1520s, a German printer named Johann Schönsperger published one of the first printed embroidery pattern books in Augsburg. The early patterns were printed as plain black squares and dots — no colors at all. Each stitcher picked her own colors. Before printed books, stitchers copied their favorite designs onto scraps of cloth and kept them rolled up in a drawer. Those trial cloths were the very first samplers.
