We know that Africa is home to some of the earliest civilizations known to man. So let’s talk about them.

Welcome to my mini series where I give you the briefest of overview of some of the most influential African kingdoms.

FYI a lot of my research comes from the book AN AFRICAN HISTORY OF AFRICA by Zeinab Badawi so if you’re intrigued by these little snippets, I highly encourage you to buy and read her book.

Part 2: The Soso Kingdom (1180-1230)
Location: modern day Sene-Gambia (Mauritania, Mali, Guinea, Ivory Coast, and Niger)
Influential figures: Soumaoro Kanté
Sites to visit: Koulouba (Kukuba) Hill - home of the Mali presidential palace and the location of Soumaoro Kanté ‘s fortress.

It’s African Women’s Day, a day created by the African Union to recognize the contributions made by African women to improve the social and economic status of women on the continent.

The role of women in Africa has changed over the centuries and influences of colonialism but women have always been and remain the linchpins of their communities.

There are 2 things that I’ll get into an online queue for, 3 that I’ll seriously consider.

1) Getting tickets to see Beyonce
2) Getting tickets for the Obama Presidential center museum
3) Signing up for Chicago Park District programs.

As much as I love a tote bag – and there are some beautiful, black-owned ones out there – I just cannot muster up the energy to have all my ducks in a row for the next launch.

But I’m very happy for all of you who have your beautiful totes and who knows, one day I may eat my words and add 4) the launch of my new favorite tote bag to the list.

It time for part 3 of a Very Brief Overview of African Art by Region and probably time for me to come up with a better introduction for this series.

This is a very brief overview desired to spark curiosity and hopefully lead you on your own discovery of African Art.

Today’s installment celebrates some of the contributions from East Africa which include, but are not limited to:

To be perfectly honest, having a “soft girl summer” is hard when you’re running a business and raising kids but I’m intentionally setting aside time this summer to read. And while I love a complex read as much as the next girl, I needed a gentle, heart-warming, YA romance to ease me back into reading.

LOVE REQUIRES CHOCOLATE was perfect. Gentle enough for my soul, tense enough to keep the pages turnings, and informative enough to make me want to go back to Paris and do the Whitney and Thierry tour.

I truly feel like there’s nothing more decadent (and soft) than lounging with a good book casually engaging with a love story.

If I can’t get distracted by a good book in the summer time then when can I?

The word “distraction” has a bad rep these days because when we use it, it usually means that we picked up our phones to send a quick text and go distracted by the latest social media trend. 5 hours later, and that little distraction has stolen much of our day.

But if you’re in search of some whimsy and softness this summer, then I challenge you to open yourself up to distractions but only the meaningful ones.

Pop into that boutique that you always walk by but never have the time to visit; stop and listen to someone busking on the street; and let yourself be swept up in a YA romance about finding love in Paris.
