The Case of the Curious Puppet

Every old book leaves clues behind.

This copy of Pinocchio didn't tell us exactly when it was printed—but it didn't have to. A publisher's imprint, Art Deco typography, its cloth binding, black-and-white illustrations, and even the words "Manufactured in the United States of America" each became pieces of evidence. Put them together, and they reveal some interesting bits about when and why a book was printed.

🕵️ Your assignment: The next time you pick up an old book, don't read the first chapter first. Instead, investigate it. Look at the cover, the publisher, the illustrations, the typography, even the endpapers. What's the first clue you'd look for? Tell us in the comments!

Take a ride down our conveyor! 💨

One by one, we place every book and piece of media face down so its barcode can be scanned. In a split second, the system determines where it goes next! Perhaps it's headed for our online bookstore, another bookseller, or a different processing path like textbooks or wholesale media.

It's a fast-moving process, but every scan is part of a much bigger mission: keeping books in circulation. This conveyor belt is delivering second chances and books back into readers' hands!

👇 Somewhere, a book you donated might be changing someone else's day. Have you ever thought about where your books end up?

09/02/2026

🧮📚 Not every treasure in our donation boxes is a novel.

From million-dollar math mysteries and engineering classics to number puzzles, colonial history, and books on healing through grief, today's Donation Mix is proof that every box holds something unexpected.

Whether you're solving equations, satisfying your curiosity, or diving into a completely new subject, there's always another book waiting to find the right reader.

Tag someone whose idea of a page-turner includes equations, proofs, or mathematical puzzles!

Today’s find is a little different.
Published in 1906, The English Renaissance preserves the lecture Oscar Wilde delivered
during his celebrated tour of America. His journey through the US made him one of the most
recognizable literary figures of his time. Rather than spotlighting his fiction, this slim volume
captures Wilde speaking directly to his audience about beauty, craftsmanship, creativity, and
why art deserves a place in everyday life.
Many of his ideas still feel surprisingly modern. The questions he asked:
What is beauty?
Why do we create?
How does art shape society?
This goes beyond us, gentle readers, who still wrestle with them today.
Sometimes the best finds remind us that conversations about art, culture, and creativity never
really end.
Imagine you could attend one lecture by any author in history. Who would you choose, and
what’s the first question you’d ask them?

Digging into the science of Frankenstein!

This copy of Frankenstein: Annotated for Scientists, Engineers, and Creators of All Kinds was created specifically for scientists, engineers, and creators, pairing Mary Shelley's original novel with essays, historical context, scientific timelines, and annotations that connect the text to everything from bioethics to artificial intelligence.

In addition, it is filled with handwritten notes, underlined passages, and even the tiny joy of a Post-it breaking down Prometheus before the story begins. Someone was connecting mythology, science, ethics, and literature one page at a time, benefiting from the footnotes of other scientists!

Today, on Mary Shelley's birthday, we celebrate the conversation that her novel inspired and that changed the world. Good editions are more than a reproduction of text- they keep engaging readers in new ways.

Let’s collect some clues! 📚🕵️

This copy of Robinson Crusoe is over a century old, but that is not what makes it interesting. A gift inscription dated September 1907, and another noting it went to Shanghai. A London bookseller's label tucked inside the cover. Publisher advertisements that help narrow when it was printed. Even the worn gilt binding tells us it was a book that was meant to be read, gifted, and treasured.

These little details are what transform a used book into a time capsule!

What other clues would you look for in a book to learn its story?
