Heritage Spotlight: W. Ray Gorsline (1892–1955)

As part of our Chapel Heritage Series, we honor W. Ray Gorsline, whose leadership helped shape our tradition of care in mid-Michigan.

Born in 1892, Ray was the son of Floyd A. Gorsline, who established F.A. Gorsline & Sons in Williamston in 1903. Following his father’s passing in 1945, Ray and his brother Claude carried forward the family business, guiding it through a time of great change.

Ray was active not only in Williamston, but also with the Gorsline-Runciman Funeral Home in Lansing, helping expand the family’s legacy of service to more communities. He bridged eras from the days of horse-drawn hearses to the modern mid-century funeral home... always with the highest standards of compassion and professionalism. He was a force of nature!

This portrait, painted in 1955 by Beaver Edwards, FRSA, the same year of Ray’s passing, stands as a tribute to his enduring impact.

For over half a century, the Gorsline family name has been linked with dignity, tradition, and care. W. Ray Gorsline’s legacy continues to live on in the families we serve today.

Behind every service, every phone call, every arrangement conference, and every family we have the privilege to serve is a team of caring professionals dedicated to making a difficult time a little easier.

Yesterday, team members from across our chapels gathered at our Lansing Chapel for our quarterly business meeting. While we're missing a few familiar faces, we're grateful for the opportunity to learn together, support one another, and continue our commitment to serving Mid-Michigan families with compassion and care.

A little color is making its way to our Lansing Chapel.

This week, our team rolled up their sleeves and planted new flowers around the chapel. While they'll need a little time to grow, we're looking forward to seeing these beds fill with color throughout the summer.

We believe the small details matter. Creating a welcoming, peaceful environment is one of the many ways we care for the families who walk through our doors each day.

There are some callings in life that never truly leave us. For Andrew “Andy” Cone, consultant and former owner of fellow Dignity Memorial provider Dillard Memorial Funeral Home & Hillcrest Memorial Park in South Carolina, service to others has continued long after his years in law enforcement ended.

Before entering funeral service, Andy served for 12 years with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). Today, he helps honor former agents by placing bronze SLED seals on their memorials across the state, creating lasting tributes to lives dedicated to protecting others.

One of the most meaningful installations was for former SLED Chief J.P. Strom, the very man who once hired Andy as a young agent. Quietly gathered graveside, without ceremony or publicity, those present simply reflected on a life of service and sacrifice.

We were deeply moved by Andy’s reminder that memorials honor not only those who served, but also the families who stood beside them through long hours, missed holidays, and difficult calls.

At Gorsline-Runciman Lansing Chapel, we are honored to serve many members of law enforcement, veterans, first responders, and their families throughout our community. Stories like this are a powerful reminder that remembrance matters, and that even the smallest acts of honor can leave a lasting impact.

Thank you, Andy, for continuing to serve others in such a meaningful way.

Heritage Spotlight: Floyd A. Gorsline (1864–1945)

Our Chapel Heritage Series beings with honoring the man who started it all - Floyd A. Gorsline.

Born in 1864 in Wheatfield Township, Floyd came from a pioneering family. His father was the first white settler in the Williamston area, clearing and farming 360 acres of land. In 1893, Floyd and his brother John purchased a local grocery business in Williamston, which they ran for eight years.

In 1903, Floyd purchased a local undertaking firm dating back to the 1880s and, with his sons Claude and Ray, founded F.A. Gorsline and Sons. Like many small-town businesses of the era, it was also tied to a furniture store. Under Floyd’s leadership, the family business became known for its quality, dignity, and professionalism.

Floyd became the first licensed embalmer in Williamston ( #803), the first to practice arterial embalming, and, as a lay Methodist minister, often conducted both the funeral and the religious service.

Floyd was not only a businessman but also a man of faith and community. A member of the Methodist church and Sunday school teacher for 50 years, he was remembered as both a devoted servant of the community and a pioneer of modern funeral service in mid-Michigan.

He passed away in 1945, leaving the business in the capable hands of his sons, who carried the family legacy into Lansing and beyond.

Floyd A. Gorsline’s story is where our heritage begins: a legacy of compassion, tradition, and service that continues to guide us more than a century later.

Writing thank you notes after the loss of a loved one is never about having the perfect wording.

For many families, it is simply a way to pause and acknowledge the kindness shown by friends, neighbors, coworkers, and loved ones during a difficult time.

Whether someone sent flowers, made a memorial contribution, brought a meal, attended services, or simply offered support, those gestures are often remembered long after the service has ended.

A simple and heartfelt “thank you” is always enough.
