This was one of the first close‑up shots from a wolf sighting earlier this month in Yellowstone. They’d gone around a small hill and I assumed they were heading straight away to rejoin their packmates just ahead. But then he appeared, ears first, then those eyes, slowly coming up the rise in front of me as I captured image after image. It was a truly breathtaking moment in my photography career.

What would you do if this slowly appeared in front of you.

I spent some time with this black bear recently. Her senses were dialed in the whole time as she kept glancing over her shoulder at something I couldn’t see. Then she turned fully, locked in, and a few moments later a lone bison wandered over the rise. She slipped across the road to give him space and continued her assault on the spring grasses that make up most of her diet.

It’s wonderfully rewarding when I get to witness a tender moment in nature. Most days out there are all grit and survival, but every now and then, I stumble into something soft, like this mom and her baby fox sharing a quiet pause. I’ll take these moments whenever they come.
