Our Store Pick of the Week features an exquisite brooch showcasing the hiragana characters for 'Okaasan' (mother) intricately carved and framed in a 3/4”H heart crafted from sterling silver (.925), complete with hinge, pin, and catch findings set in back. John Tonai's sisters Susan and Teresa took their Scrub Nothing T-shirts to a community dye bath and honestly, we are OBSESSED. They started with our classic cream tees and transformed them into these incredible custom blue and tie-dye to wear to their favorite marches. We think they came out absolutely amazing!!! 😍🎨

John, Susan and Teresa will be joined by author Jolene Gutierrez and illustrator Chris Sasaki at the Nikkei Children's Book Festival to present "Unbreakable," the picture book written by their father, Min Tonai! 📚✨ Make sure you stop by and show them some love!

You will also find a JANM Store pop-up at the festival featuring "Unbreakable" AND of course, Scrub Nothing T-shirts! 🛍️

Celebrate Asian American, Pacific Islander, Native Hawaiian Heritage Month, Children’s Book Week, and Kodomo no hi (Japanese Children’s Day) with our second annual Nikkei Children’s Book Festival. Saturday, May 9th from 9 am- 3 pm. This year’s festival highlights heroes of all ages who have strengthened our community and made it special in big and small ways.

Explore the breadth and diversity of children’s literature across the Nikkei community with author and illustrator Storytime, signings, and meet-and-greets, arts and crafts for all ages.

Featured guests include Stan and Julie Sakai (Chibi Usagi), Maggie Tokuda-Hall and Yas Imamura (Love in the Library), Mia Wenjen (Barbed Wire Between Us), Jolene Gutiérrez, Chris Sasaki, and John Tonai (Unbreakable), Korey Watari and Mike Wu (Kimi the Ballerina).

Store Pick of the week.

May 4-10 is Children's Book Week. "Citizen USA, " was an unpublished manuscript that was donated to JANM in 2002 by Lois Ferguson, the wife of the author. It was created at the Manzanar concentration camp between 1942 and 1943 by Charles (Chuck) Ferguson, then, the Director of Adult Education. In words and photographs, the voice and perspective of a young Sansei girl from Hollywood, California, describes the routine of camp life as well as the fear and uncertainty about the future that she and her family face. At the book’s conclusion she wonders, “Isn’t America still democratic?” Seeing hard truths and difficult circumstances from a child’s point of view is more relevant than ever before.

Farewell to Manzanar, was the first commercial film written, performed, photographed and scored by Japanese Americans about the World War II camp experience and broadcast on prime time television.

Jeanne Wakatsuki was seven years old in 1942 when her family was uprooted from their home and sent to live at Manzanar—with 10,000 other Japanese Americans amidst searchlight towers and armed guards. Although it is the story of only one Japanese American family’s experiences, it has become a modern classic, often compared with The Diary of Anne Frank as an example of poignant literature about the effects of war on youth and the human spirit.
