For years, efforts to remove problem sea lions have been fought by people who see a charismatic animal and refuse to look at the bigger ecological picture.
But when growing predator populations gather at choke points like Columbia River dams and consume significant numbers of endangered salmon, wildlife managers cannot afford to make decisions based on emotion, appearances, or social-media outrage.
That’s why bipartisan support for expanding the removal of problem sea lions is encouraging.
Real wildlife management is not about protecting one species at all costs. It is about protecting the entire ecosystem—including struggling salmon runs, orcas, tribal fisheries, recreational fisheries, and the communities that depend on them.
Sometimes responsible conservation requires difficult and unpopular decisions. Ecosystems cannot be managed by upper-middle-class wine moms who think every cute animal should be untouchable.
