Sailor’s Valentines have long been part of Nantucket’s maritime story. During the whaling era, sailors returning from distant voyages brought home intricate shell mosaics — handcrafted in the Caribbean from thousands of tiny tropical shells arranged into floral motifs, hearts, compass roses, and geometric patterns. These treasured pieces carried both artistry and affection, becoming lasting symbols of love and homecoming.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That legacy continues to inspire shell artists today. From Becky Peraner’s work to the star-shaped shell compositions featured in a client’s home, contemporary interpretations carry forward the same spirit of craftsmanship and connection to the sea. While the forms may evolve, the enduring beauty of shells — and the stories they tell — remain rooted in Nantucket’s coastal tradition.

The dining room at Feather’s Nest, one of our featured projects in “Nantucket Looms: A Legacy of Style”, is a rhapsody in blue. We wanted the fine architectural details of the dining room to shine, so the walls, ceiling, and trim were all painted the same rich high-gloss shade of blue. Color drenching was a fantastic way to update this antique Nantucket home, built in 1794.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
On the mantel, Italian creamware apothecary jars flank a mixed-media piece by artist David Wiggins. The table is set with ceramic plates and bowls on a seagrass charger with Nantucket Looms cotton napkins. Inside the matching blue closet-turned-bar is one of our favorite wallpapers by Textiles + Wallcoverings. Look upwards in the dining room: the celestial ceiling of this jewel-box room has been painted to look like a cloud-dappled sky. We think Feather’s Nest just may be a little piece of heaven on earth.

Who has been watching “The Five-Star Weekend”?
We have loved seeing Nantucket so beautifully captured on screen, from favorite island spots to familiar faces appearing in the background. Most of all, it has been exciting to spot a little Nantucket Looms sprinkled throughout the series.

When the show’s set designer approached us to create Hollis’s welcome baskets, each one was individually tailored to the character receiving it. We had such fun considering which handwoven cotton throw each guest would choose, then filling the baskets with beach towels, soaps, and our handwoven fabric clutches.
We immediately connected with Hollis’s generous approach to hosting and gifting. After all, thoughtful gifts have been at the heart of Nantucket Looms for nearly six decades. We have always believed the best gifts are meaningful, useful, and a little indulgent—something the recipient will be genuinely delighted to receive.

An enclosed porch is a welcome addition to any Nantucket summer home. This cozy spot is the porch at “Beach Bucket,” a renovated 1930s summer house on the Cliff featured in our book “Nantucket Looms: A Legacy of Style”. White paint on both the shingles and beadboard ceiling gives a twist to these traditional materials. Deep-barrel chairs constructed of abaca rope and Danish cording give a subtle nod to the island’s rich maritime history. Artist Jocelyn Sandor Urban’s painting “Madaket Harbor” acts like a window onto one of the island’s most iconic scenes. Our Ivory Handwoven Mohair and Silk throw is perfect for taking the chill off on cool island nights.

Explore Beach Bucket room by room in “Nantucket Looms: A Legacy of Style”, where you’ll find the fabrics, artwork, and collected pottery that give the home its character, along with stories behind many of the artists and makers we’ve worked with for decades.

So many of you resonated with the story we shared about our founders’ summer home in Madequecham, affectionately known as “the Shack.” Many responded with a sense of nostalgia for an earlier Nantucket — one shaped by simple cottages, salt air, and days lived close to the water.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
While the island has changed in countless ways, there are still places, homes, and corners of Nantucket that bring us back to that feeling. One of our favorites is the Lydia cottage.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
An island icon, Lydia is one of the tiny wharf cottages that has stood for generations, first as a fish shanty, later as an artist’s studio, and now as a guest cottage. With its small footprint, shingled simplicity, and position just above the harbor, it immediately recalls the spirit of the Shack.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Inside is a trove of collected pieces to discover. Our interiors team layered artwork, handwoven textiles, vintage pieces, found objects, and curiosities — many by the same artists, or reminiscent of the pieces once found in the Shack. A Bob Stark Jr. signature red sail painting hangs above the sofa, while a bird decoy by renowned carver Mark McNair sits perched on the windowsill. Objects that pique curiosity sit atop coffee tables and shelves: a teak bowl on the coffee table holds antique glove stretchers and a vintage scrimshawed comb from The Cloth Company, while a ship’s prism, once a mariner’s essential, becomes a sculptural accent for this seaside home.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Though small in scale, Lydia holds layers of interest and stories, all recalling the ease, natural beauty and heritage of craftsmanship of Nantucket. Like the Shack, it reminds us that Nantucket style has never been about perfection. It is collected, handmade, and personal.

Introducing our summer home collection, inspired by a recent Nantucket Looms Interiors project in Tom Nevers.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Our clients envisioned a Nantucket interpretation of farmhouse style: open, welcoming, and designed with ample room for entertaining family and friends. Set among the trees, this renovated upside-down home brings the main living spaces to the upper level, where natural light, treetop views, and the distant outline of Sankaty Lighthouse shape the feeling of the home.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Natural oak flooring, soft paint colors, patterned wallpaper, and V-groove paneling — a departure from more traditional shiplap— give the home its warmth. This interpretation of farmhouse is neither rustic nor overly nostalgic. It is collected, livable, and made for gathering. Our summer home collection draws from that same spirit: natural textures, tailored details, soft pattern, and pieces that bring ease and Nantucket character into the home.

Our founders, Bill and Andy, had a summer home in Madequecham Valley affectionally referred to as the “Shack”, that looked right out onto the ocean. A former bathhouse from the late 1800’s, the home was primitive, yet elegant and well curated, filled with natural fiber rugs, handwoven textiles, found objects, artwork and lots of fresh air. Life at the Shack was the epitome of island living: a swim in the ocean, followed by an outdoor shower and a martini at golden hour.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The colors that surrounded the Shack — fog gray, sea blues, the sage greens of the brush, the weathered browns of the shingles — became the palette of Nantucket Looms. And the objects that Bill and Andy collected, made by hand and passed down with stories of their origin, are the foundation of what we now call Nantucket cottage style.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When we think of the Shack, we think of slower days spent outside, at the mercy of the tides and the light, with the ocean always somewhere in view. Surrounded by beauty indoors and out. With summer on the horizon, we can’t think of a better way to spend it than the way Bill and Andy did.
