Gold is an element, so to make it you have to change the number of protons in an atom’s nucleus. Gold has 79 protons. Scientists can do this using:
* particle accelerators
* nuclear reactors
* radioactive decay experiments
For example, they can bombard elements like mercury or platinum with particles and occasionally produce tiny amounts of gold atoms.
The problem is:
* it costs millions of dollars
* produces only microscopic amounts
* the gold is sometimes radioactive
* the process uses more energy and money than the gold is worth
So mining real gold from Earth is far cheaper.
This idea goes back to ancient alchemists who tried turning lead into gold. Modern nuclear physics proved it’s technically possible — just not economically useful.
Fun fact: some gold in the universe is believed to form during massive cosmic events like neutron star collisions and supernovas.
