The KAPLAN BREHM blank (the weight, distribution of mass, and outer shape of the mouthpiece) was developed through a quite involved data collection and testing exercise where we compared the same inside mouthpiece geometry (rim, cup, bore) on very many *slightly* different mouthpiece blanks, with small amounts of weight added or subtracted from various outer features of the blank. After having professional trumpeters from all backgrounds test and compare our many test blanks, we came up with the one pictured - the distinctive KAPLAN BREHM mouthpiece blank. Our mouthpieces in our blank lands right in the same weight category as a Bach or a Reeves, while adjusting the distribution of that mass to keep the acoustic feedback levels of those classic mouthpieces, while offering a comparatively easier to use interface for slotting/pitch control.

How can a mouthpiece bring you peace?

Well, I find peace knowing that I have access to a full suite of artistic tools, which helps me get dialed in for any playing situation…

In this case, we’ve got the 620 5/8 No. 26. It’s my (Jon’s) favorite “small” mouthpiece currently - sitting in an undeniable sweet spot, with a clever comfort rim with a 5-7 inner diameter (think Rod Franks, or John Hagstrom), a full and rich BC hybrid cup, and a supportive and colorful 26 bore. It’s a lovely piece, just a small part of our wider ecosystem of artistic tools. I’ve used this in quintet, as well as on principal in more chamber orchestra type settings. Want that same ease in a larger orchestra? Maybe try our No. 24 bore, which allows for more dynamic headroom and a freer blow.

If you’re in Arizona and want to try out mouthpieces firsthand, come join us at the Professional Musicians of Arizona building in Phoenix on April 24th from 2pm-4pm for a demo! Or, if you see Jon on the street with a huge orange flight case of mouthpieces, approach him slowly and make gentle pspsppspsps sounds to avoid spooking him!

The 620 3/8 No. 26 by KAPLAN BREHM is such a supportive and comfortable piece in our line up… with such a full sound and supremely comfortable rim when compared to the standard issue 5-7 diameter mouthpieces. I often break this mouthpiece out while playing various higher horns, and I love how it works with this Thein G trumpet, even though I normally use this mouthpiece or its 4/8 or 5/8 siblings on Eb or D trumpet. The 620 rim is our supportive 5-7 diameter, 3/8 cup is our “compact” c cup, balanced with the comfortable resistance and familiar interface of our No. 26 bore.

The .official G trumpet is a fabulous and well engineered instrument, with a functional triggers for both 1st slide as well as one for 3+4 combined. It has a huge and full sound, and is differently balanced enough to allow me to use the more “stock” style of our No. 26 bore instead of a specialized piccolo trumpet mouthpiece (but more on that later…) 😎🎺 the first valve trigger really comes in handy to control the pitch of those high fs (concert C).

Do you still believe that narrow diameter equals “small sound”?

We certainly don’t. All 4 of these Titanium CarboNitride coated pieces have our ultra comfortable and supportive 620 rim - our thoughtfully designed 5-7 diameter rim that even large mouthpiece players will find comfortable. These all also feature our No. 24 bore - our more free blowing “orchestra” style option. The different cup depths allow slight adjustments to overall color, timbre, and presentation, allowing to sound how YOU want to sound no matter which size of mouthpiece you normally play.

We recently restocked on lots of Titanium CarboNitride models (our hypoallergenic and hyper durable coating option), as well as our classic bright silver plate. Check the link in the bio to see what’s in stock.

Imagine sounding how YOU want to sound, in any situation…

That’s why we built our mouthpiece ecosystem.

Traditional stock mouthpieces vary widely from rim to rim, cup to cup, and leave you hanging when you want something just a little different.

Fully custom mouthpieces can work great, especially at the time they’re made… but if something changes (you, your face, your sound preference, the section you’re playing with, the genre, etc) the full custom route leaves you needing to order another fully custom mouthpiece - an endeavor that takes a lot of time and resources.

Our ecosystem is designed to solve both problems - our rims are designed to be easy to switch between across a wide range of diameters, our cups offering a lot of color options with a familiar feeling interface, and our different bore sizes allowing you to dial in to your exact resistance and scale preference.

Don’t let choosing a mouthpiece stress you out… even if you’re playing in a lot of different situations, KAPLAN BREHM has you covered.

Need a little more support? Go from your classic 640 (1-1/2) size rim down to a 630 or 620.

Need a more rich and full sound? Go from our 3/8 (compact C) up to a 4/8 (1C style) or even 5/8 (hybrid 1C/5B) cup.

Need to have a little more to push against for that sizzle? Go from our No. 24 bore to our No. 26.

Take a breath, relax, and enjoy creating art.

A 3C with a FULLER sound for nuanced classical performance - the KAPLAN BREHM 630 4/8 No. 26 🎺

The 630 4/8 No. 26 is another one of my favorite options in our line-up… it has the efficiency and ease of our 630 rim (a 3 diameter rim that is designed to be as comfortable as your favorite 1-1/2 or 1 rims) on our classic and rich 4/8 cup (styled after a 1C) and our supportive and colorful No. 26 bore. I always appreciate the combo of the ease of production and response of the 630 rim and No. 26 bore, along with the full body and rich sound of the 4/8 cup.
