RIP King Harald

King Harald V’s life spanned 89 years, from a childhood shaped by war and exile to more than three decades as Norway’s King. Here are the major milestones:
* 21 February 1937 – Born at Skaugum, Asker. Harald was the only son of Crown Prince Olav and Crown Princess Märtha. He was the first prince born in Norway in 567 years and, under the succession rules then in force, secured the royal line.
* 1940–1945 – Childhood in exile. After N**i Germany invaded Norway on 9 April 1940, three-year-old Harald fled with his mother and sisters first to Sweden and then to the United States. He returned to Norway on 7 June 1945, shortly after liberation.
* 1955–1959 – Education and military training. He graduated from Oslo Cathedral School in 1955 and completed his military education at the Norwegian Military Academy in 1959.
* 1957 – Became Crown Prince. When his grandfather King Haakon VII died on 21 September 1957, Harald became heir to the throne under his father, King Olav V.
* 1959 – Met Sonja Haraldsen. Their relationship was controversial because Sonja was not of royal or noble birth. They waited nine years before receiving permission to marry.
* 1960–1962 – Studied at Oxford. At Balliol College he studied social science, history and economics.
* 1964 – Olympic flag bearer. A passionate sailor, Crown Prince Harald carried the Norwegian flag at the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Summer Olympics.
* 29 August 1968 – Married Sonja. Crown Prince Harald and Sonja Haraldsen married in Oslo Cathedral, one of the defining personal moments of his life.
* 1971 & 1973 – Became a father. Princess Märtha Louise was born on 22 September 1971, followed by Crown Prince Haakon on 20 July 1973.
* 1987 – Sailing world champion. Harald and the crew of Fram X won a world championship, reflecting his lifelong passion for sailing and sport.
* 17 January 1991 – Became King Harald V. Following the death of his father, King Olav V, Harald immediately succeeded to the throne. He swore his constitutional oath on 21 January and, together with Queen Sonja, was consecrated at Nidaros Cathedral on 23 June 1991. He adopted the traditional motto “Alt for Norge” – “All for Norway.”
* 1991–2026 – A reign centred on service and national unity. For more than 35 years he represented Norway at home and abroad. During national tragedies—including the 22 July 2011 terrorist attacks—he became an important voice of collective grief, reassurance and unity.
* 2022 – Ended competitive sailing. After decades of competing nationally and internationally, the King announced that his competitive sailing career had come to an end.
* 28 August 2026 – His death. The Norwegian Royal House announced that King Harald V died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital, Rikshospitalet, at 6:35 AM, aged 89. He had been King of Norway for more than 35 years.
His life can perhaps be summed up by the motto he inherited from his father and grandfather and carried throughout his reign: “Alt for Norge.”
