This is an extra-special event for me to host! On Friday we’ll be holding the launch party for Judith Malina’s Diaries—a four-volume set edited by my dear friend, Kate Bredeson! I can’t wait to hear her read and celebrate this truly remarkable achievement.

The Diaries of Judith Malina is a four-volume set that publishes for the first time together the edited diaries of radical theater director, actor, and activist Judith Malina from 1947 to 1971, the most influential period of her remarkable and storied career. A committed anarchist and pacifist, Malina made theater as a way to engage in revolutionary action. Her diaries showcase her political and social observations, cultural commentary, self-reflection, and wit. This expertly prepared set invites us to recognize Malina for her accomplishments not only as an artist and an activist but as one of the great literary diarists.

I don’t know why I love this photo took of me and Mari so much, but I do. It’s on film, for one, which you can’t ever replicate, try as filters and apps may. And it just so clearly represents working, writing motherhood. This is why she’s a great documentarian. Her photos and videos tell stories so well. But this is a post to say I restarted my newsletter as a Substack! This first one is very personal and tells you a lot of backstory and also explains what’s been going on behind-the-scenes. A lot! Good morning Portland! Bishop and Wilde is looking extra cute today! Come join us at the shop for pride month! We have q***r books by q***r authors sold in this q***r shop. We support local q***r authors. We have old school cassette tapes, records, cards, jewelry, crystals. Records are spinning. Djuna Barnes the elderly chihuahua is here today. Come hang out with us in one of our comfy chairs and grab a book. Our fearless captains Melissa and Lindsay are out so a variety of local guest stars will be behind the counter through early July.

We’re introducing our brand new book bags designed by the incomparable and Saturday the 6th the best baker in town will be popping up: ! Maybe there will even be a sidewalk sale? Who knows!
