Oh, hey, look! It’s a used Gibson Les Paul Studio with a hardshell case.

We would say more about this, but they tend to speak for themselves.

(Mostly, they say: take me home.)

Roses are red,
Violets are blue.
Seafoam is green

and we could go on like this all day but we forget where we were going with this.

OH! Right: we just took in a used telecaster. It’s a Fender Standard (made in Mexico) with a rosewood fretboard and two humbuckers. (Which, Randy informs me, is a telecaster configuration known commonly among enthusiasts as “an atrocity.” He’s a tele traditionalist.)

This seafoam green tele comes with a genuine Fender hardshell case (a $199 value). It’s fun to play, growls like a lion, and stands out across a room. The consignee has agreed to let it go for $599.

Hello! Today, we’re going to try an experiment.

We’re going to post two versions of our announcement of this freshly-arrived consignment amp.

First, the way we would normally present this amp:

“Check out this fresh consignment, a mint-condition Blackstar Silverline Deluxe 1x12 100-watt amplifier! This amp offers digital tube-amp replication. What’s that mean? This amp captures the sounds of six different classic tube amplifiers, ALL WITH THE FLICK OF A K**B. Super cool, right? Best yet, while these amps sell for $749 brand-new, this immaculate but slightly-used one is marked at just $450.”

That’s how we regularly advertise interesting newly-arrived gear. However, it has come to our attention that people inherently assume music stores are more expensive than Facebook Marketplace.

So now, just for fun and to appeal to those of you who fervently believe that Marketplace is THE PLACE to find THE BEST deals, we present the Facebook Marketplace for this amp:

[two blurry pictures of an amp, or possibly a radiator, or maybe a ceiling tile]

“BACKSTER VINTAGE AMP 1000 WATTS TUBES NEW ONLY USE ONCE BRAN NEW $999 WILLING TO SELL FOR ??? MAKE OFFER NO LOBALLS CALL [redacted] ASK FOR CHRIS”

Regardless of which ad piqued your interest, the amp really is just $450, and it also really is virtually brand-new. 🙂

If this is your thing, we’re here Mon-Friday, 10-5, Saturday 10-3.

Or — you know — just call [redacted] and ask for Chris.

Isn’t it cool when a guitar is pretty AND multifunctional?

This Michael Kelly Hybrid Special is a semihollowbody with both traditional humbuckers (🤘) and an undersaddle piezo pickup (🪕 - sorry, that’s as close to an ‘acoustic guitar’ emoji as we can get).

What does this mean? WELL. It means you can jump from AC/DC to James Taylor with the flip of a switch.

These are listed online for anywhere from $750 and up. We’ve priced THIS one, however, at just $450. It even comes with a free case!

Some guitars have more of a vibe than others.

This 1950s Kay archtop just came in on consignment. In the 25 years we’ve been selling guitars (as either Aroostook Music or KMH), this is the only vintage Kay we’ve seen in decent enough shape for us to sell it.

It’s fun to play, and maybe even more fun to look at.

It’s marked at $499. And if you break that down by the amount of admiring glances you’ll direct at it for the next ten years, that breaks down to fractions of a penny per glance.

We are saddened to report the loss of a legend in the school-band world, our good friend Dale Perkins.

Dale was the one-man force behind Perkins Music. Starting in the 1980s, every fall Dale would drive to the schools in Aroostook County with a trailer full of hundreds of school band charts. Whether a teacher had a seven-piece jazz band with a great horn section but an iffy rhythm section or a 110-piece high school band with 26 overly-enthusiastic drummers (like Ashland, my alma mater), Dale knew exactly which charts would work best for your group, which mouthpieces would better suit your lead trumpet player, and what extra percussion instruments could be passed along the Ashland drum line to keep idle hands out of trouble.

Dale and Larry Hall (the H in KMH) struck up a friendship when Mr. Hall was Ashland's music teacher. That friendship continued when Mr. Hall was hired by Aroostook Music. Dale made it clear that even though Mr. Hall worked for another music store, they were not competitors; they were friends and colleagues. If you ever saw a KMH booth at a festival during our early days, it wasn't a coincidence that it was right next to the Perkins Music House booth, with a communal box of donuts and box of coffee resting between the two tables.

When Aroostook Music dissolved and Mr. Hall, Randy, and I started our own shop, Dale was there from the beginning. He immediately offered his help and expertise if we ever needed it -- and we did. Soon, we developed a routine of exchanging used instruments. If we had a bass trombone we knew he could sell easier than we could, we'd let him know, and he'd trade us a used Strat that would move much more quickly for us.

He and Mr. Hall remained close friends until Mr. Hall's passing in 2018, and has been a regular contributor to the Larry Hall Memorial Fund ever since. Dale was the silent source of many of the instruments that have wound up in the hands of kids in need in The County. Since Mr. Hall's passing, Dale has been our go-to guru for advice on all of our highly-specialized band-instrument questions, from repair recommendations to companies that were small-dealer-friendly. Although our businesses were distinctly different, we agreed it felt like our two stores were basically just two branches of one company. He was gracious, kind, funny, and a genuine joy to spend time with. We're going to miss him a lot.

Our sincere sympathies go out to his family and friends. We are all better for having been lucky enough to be friends and family of Dale. May we all aspire to work to fill the space he leaves behind.

Drummers!

Looking for a new-to-you ride cymbal?

How about two ride cymbals in one?

The Sabian AAX Omni 22” ride was developed in conjunction with Jojo Mayer (a RIDICULOUSLY good clinician - check out his YouTube videos if you’re bored).

The concept was to create a ride that offered TWO ride cymbals in one: a thick, dark-lathed portion surrounding the bell that produced a more defined ‘ping,’ and a thinner-lathed section at the edge for more wash.

The resulting cymbal is a thing of beauty. It cuts through the mix when you lay into the bell or the middle portion of the cymbal, but it’s light and airy at the edges.

Brand-new, these sell for $499. We’re selling ours used for $225, with free shipping if you stop by and pick it up. (😶)

Had your eye on a brand-new Fender CD60CE acoustic-electric, but you’re worried about how that $369 price tag would cut into your grocery budget?

We get it. We’ve eaten our fair share of ramen noodles while staring adoringly at our new guitar (or cymbals, or amplifier) too.

However, ramen gets old, even if you get creative with it. (IF YOU MIX IN CRUSHED OFF-BRAND DORITOS, IT ALMOST DOESN’T EVEN TASTE LIKE RAMEN ANY MORE…)

If you really really want a CD60CE but dread weeks of salty noodles, maybe this will help: our latest consignment is this CD60CE, complete with a built-in tuner and a free Fender hardshell case.

Priced at $199, that’s a savings of $170 you can put towards non-ramen-related groceries.

OR — you know — another new guitar, or new cymbals, or a new amp… 😶

***UPDATE: SOLD***

Once upon a time, our standard base price for a used electric guitar was $99.

Any working guitar was worth at least $99, we reasoned.

And after we marked it so, we’d go to McDonalds and spend $0.99 on a McDouble cheeseburger, or gas up our car at $1.39/gallon.

As you may have inferred, it’s been a while since we marked a used guitar at $99. Simply put, prices on guitars have gone up, which has trickled down to our used inventory.

Today, though, we have an exception. This used kit guitar was built by a customer who no longer wants it cluttering up his house. There’s no familiar brand on it, but it works fine and even comes with a hardshell case (missing two of the three latches).

We’re pricing the guitar AND case (together) at $99.

It’s such a good deal, you should celebrate it with a $4.99 McDouble.

Lots of guitars pass through here. We try not to get attached.

This Guild DS-240 makes it awfully hard, though. It’s the guitar we find ourselves grabbing when we need to decompress for a minute. It just… feels good. And sounds good. And looks good. And feels good. (I know we said that already, but it’s worth repeating.)

If you’re in the market for a very nice used acoustic in the $5-600 range, there’s a very good chance you’ll fall in love with this one.
