I had the pleasure of attending the McNally Jackson event with Michael Cunningham in conversation with Sarah McNally last week to celebrate Michael’s new book, UNSAYABLE.

They both spoke about the meaning of holding the event at Judson Memorial Church, with its long history of activism and the place, in the midst of the AIDS crisis, that Michael and fellow ACT UP members staged a “political funeral” at the request of their friend, before he died from that terrible disease. AIDS was still a mystery then, savage and terrifying.

He also talked about walking through Washington Square Park every day (still!) on his way to his writing studio, and how it inspires him. “I can’t imagine writing without walking through Washington Square Park.”

I took my time walking through the park after the event. It was a gorgeous summer evening in NYC, and my heart felt full.

It was wonderful to have our neighbor and Laughlin Children's Center neuropsychologist Dr. Kristie Zoller at the store last weekend to sign copies of her new book BUTTERCUP: THE QUEEN OF KINDNESS. BUTTERCUP shows kids how to engage in small acts of kindness so they can see their world as a better, friendlier, and more beautiful place to live. This is a great lesson for adults, as well!

Great piece in The Nation by Katrina Vanden Heuvel, their editorial director and publisher. We are resisting big tech! The number of indie bookstores in the US has grown by 70% since 2020, and we see that right here in Western PA, with numerous new bookstores opening of all shapes and sizes. A rising tide lifts all boats! But make no mistake: this is still a difficult business and we continue to face challenges such as rising costs (including rents) and predatory pricing by online competitors. We appreciate all of your support and feel so lucky to be entering our 98th year of independent bookselling. We know we can’t rest on laurels and expect to succeed so we continue to work hard to keep the Penguin strong!
