We’ve had the most beautiful week in Cornwall this week. Plenty of sun ☀️, barbecues, books, bodyboarding, games, crazy golf and a much needed rest. Here’s what we’ve been reading this week. Holiday books take a lot of planning… Louise started her list in January 😆

We visited two gorgeous bookshops we’ve not been to before and and Louise got a great recommendation for the new Jem Calder book which sounds amazing.

We have now visited the incredible that Clare has been telling us about forever. What a revelation! Won’t be stopping anywhere else from now on 😂 Their meringues have kept the kids quiet most of the way home.

Thanks to Eleanor, Penny and Ruth (who came back to help us over the holidays 🙌) who have kept the shop running for us. It’s because of them that we’re able to get away and we’re hugely grateful.

Back to reality now but when reality is running a bookshop that’s a lot easier to cope with 💛

Eleanor has LOVED John of John by Douglas Stuart.

An outstanding novel about love it all its forms; long held resentments; shame; longing, and the damage that can be caused by a lack of honesty and understanding.

Beautifully written - easily the best book Eleanor has read in a long time!!

🥳🐧🥳🐧🥳🐧🥳🐧🥳🐧🥳🐧🥳🐧🥳🐧

We are SO proud and excited to say that our little bookshop has won a grant from the brilliant people at Penguin to promote the National Year of Reading!

Our Penguin Children’s Bookshop Grant will fund our exciting project:

⭐️ Read Together, Read for Pleasure ⭐️

We will work with three local schools to increase parental engagement with reading and build parents’ confidence to support their child’s reading. Our focus will be on children in Early Years and Key Stage 1.

The project will involve:

🐧 school-based author events
🐧 delivering workshops for parents and carers to help build confidence to support their children’s reading at home
🐧 organising visits to the bookshop and the library
🐧 each child will also be provided with a book to take away with them to read and enjoy with an adult

Our initiative aims to:
🐧 increase reading frequency and enjoyment at home
🐧 strengthen school-family connections
🐧 equip parents/carers with the knowledge of where to access books and how to enjoy reading together

We are absolutely over the moon and can’t wait to get started. We are determined that this project will make a genuine difference to the children of Holmfirth and want to say a huge thank you to Penguin for understanding what our shop is all about. We’ll update you every month so keep watching to find out more! 💛

Let’s do this 🙌

We are SO SO excited to be welcoming Matson Taylor back to the shop on Saturday 27th June (doors 6.30pm) to celebrate the release of his new book, Roman Mornings 🙌

For those of you who loved Matson’s Evie Epworth books, you’ll know we’ve been waiting patiently for his return.

His latest novel is set in 70s Rome and features Clemmie and Monty who meet by chance and develop a lifelong friendship. It’s full of cosy characters and stories, a cat called Octavian, Italian food and culture, and lots of laughs.

We love Matson, he is just the kindest and loveliest man and he won’t mind us telling you that he *loves food*! 😂 Therefore, to celebrate all things Italian, we have arranged for to provide us with Italian delicacies including some gorgeous Cannoli. This event is not to be missed - good company, Italian food and drink… and books! 🇮🇹

Tickets are £5 and available in the shop or on our website here: https://to-be-read.co.uk/books/an-evening-with-matson-taylor/

Be quick as tickets won’t stick around for long! 💛

London Falling is straight onto Louise and Eleanor’s books of the year list.

It tells the true story of Zac, aged 19, who jumped off the balcony of an apartment block on the banks of the River Thames in 2019. His devastated parents were left deeply unsatisfied by the police’s investigation into his death and their lack of curiosity about potential witnesses. They fought relentlessly for several years to understand the mystery surrounding Zac’s death and his hidden parallel life in the years leading up to his death.

By a twist of fate, Patrick Radden Keefe, author of Say Nothing, found out about their story and knew he needed to write about it. London Falling is the result of over two years of research by Patrick, including interviews with Zac’s parents and many other important players in his life.

This is an incredible book that you won’t be able to put down and is also a sobering tale for young adults and parents alike ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (£22)

Copies are available in the shop and also on our website here: https://to-be-read.co.uk/books/london-falling/

Birdlands is a fantastic animal adventure from shop favourite, Anthony McGowan. It features three birds who must journey from their train station home to the promised land of the town dump. The catch? None of them can fly and must walk: across busy roads; through abandoned buildings; and via the fields and hedgerows where predators lie in wait…
Both heartbreaking and uplifting, this is a brilliant book for 10+! James absolutely loved it! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
