Chris Stapleton - Traveller
May 5th, 2015.

Recorded at Nashville's historic RCA Studio A (with additional production at The Castle and Blackbird Studio), Traveller was produced by Dave Cobb (Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell) and recorded by Vance Powell (Jack White). In addition to renditions of Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove's 'Tennessee Whiskey' and Don Sampson's 'Was It 26,' the album features twelve original songs, including fan-favorite 'Sometimes I Cry.'

The Twilight Sad make their long-awaited return with It's The Long Goodbye, their sixth studio album released via Rock Action Records. It's The Long Goodbye is a cogent story of loss and personal crisis, rooted in specific experience. Set to urgent and guitar-rich arrangements from Andy MacFarlane, with James Graham’s distinct, raw and impassioned vocals, the result is a pinnacle for The Twilight Sad in a career of tremendous integrity and artistry, and a record that honours the band’s ability to turn lived experience into fully felt music.

Including the blistering single Waiting For The Phone Call and featuring the legendary Robert Smith of The Cure, It's The Long Goodbye was recorded in London’s Battery Studios with Andy Savours (My Bloody Valentine) and mixed by Chris Coady (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Slowdive).

April 27, 1992. 34 years ago today.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Henry’s Dream

The first record to feature Bad Seeds stalwarts, Martyn P. Casey, on bass and the late Conway Savage on the piano is often maligned by Cave as being completed badly. In fact, it’s why he and Mick Harvey re-mixed the album and later recorded Live Seeds.

Cave said that he wanted the songs “done justice” and that David Briggs, who preferred a “live-in-the-studio” atmosphere, had missed much of the songs’ power. For this reason alone, the record could be considered one of the worst of his career. Cave’s dedication to his art is, after all, perhaps his most vital talent. However, that doesn’t stop just how brilliant the LP is.

A powerful record with enough menace to make you shudder on cue, the LP is bristling with the kind of malicious intent that would make Cave a household name in the decades that followed.

April 24, 1989. Tom Petty - Full Moon Fever

37 years ago today.

Ten years had passed since Petty's last solid outing (Damn the Torpedoes in 1979), and Full Moon Fever fully resuscitated the artist's career, which - some would say "arguably" - had been losing steam. With the album's four major hits and rave reviews from the critics (these things do not always go hand-in-hand), Petty must have breathed a sigh of relief. He left the Heartbreakers behind, hooked up with musician, writer, and producer Jeff Lynne, and rocked out with Runnin' Down a Dream, got mellow and introspective on Free Fallin' and A Face in the Crowd, and paid tribute (finally) to the Byrds with a cover of Feel a Whole Lot Better. He perfected the sing-along guitar-pop song on Yer So Bad and had a wild time on Zombie Zoo. Pure Petty perfection!

Released April 23rd, 1976. Fifty years ago today.

Ramones - Ramones

Ramones is one of those rare records where there is not a single weak or out-of-place song. Change ups like the bubblegummy near-ballad "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" and the uncharacteristically harsh "53rd and 3rd" (an unsentimental song about Dee Dee Ramone's days as a teenage hustler) vary the album's sound and mood more than its detractors (and even some of its fans) maintain.
