It is hard to believe that it is four years ago today that we lost Sylvia Lancaster, a powerhouse of a woman and a force of nature, who channelled her grief from her daughter’s loss into creating a movement that continues to change lives.

After Sophie’s murder in a hate crime attack, Sylvia founded the Sophie Lancaster Foundation to do all she could to stop other people from being targeted simply for being themselves.

Through her determination to change things, she worked tirelessly to fight intolerance and created a legacy that continues to reach schools, communities and individuals across the UK and beyond. The Foundation continues to give a voice to the alternative community – the legacy that Sylvia was most proud of.

Today, in a world that is increasingly divided, Sylvia’s message feels more important than ever. She reminded us that difference should never be feared but respected, protected and celebrated. Her vision was of a society where everyone belongs, and where individuality is met with interest and compassion rather than intolerance.

Four years on, Sylvia’s impact lives on in the work of the Foundation she built. Her legacy is not only remembered - it is lived every day through the work we continue together.

We remember Sylvia with gratitude and pride and we remain committed to carrying her message on to Stamp Out Prejudice, Hatred and Intolerance Everywhere.
