Don't forget this Banned Book Week that recently over in Chelsea, MI the Vice President of the school board said she wanted to burn Toni Morrison's "The Bluest Eye" on the front lawn of the high school! Our fight against government censorship rages on! Third Mind Books will continue to carry the torch so valiantly held by the Beat Generation in the march against the suppression of expression! Third Mind Books' Poet of the Month: Jack Hirschman (1933-2021)

San Francisco's Poet Laureate from 2006 to 2009 Jack Hirschman was born in the Bronx, studied at City College of New York and earned a PhD at Indiana University, eventually settling in San Francisco's North Beach in the early 1970s. Jack kept alive the idea of San Francisco as a poets' city, with poetry performed aloud in cafés, bookstores and streets rather than confined to universities, continuing the San Francisco Renaissance's openness to mysticism and esoteric traditions. He was also instrumental in linking the older North Beach generation (Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Bob Kaufman, Diane di Prima) with younger street and activist poets, acting as a mentor and a fixture of the neighborhood for nearly fifty years. His major work (“The Arcanes”) is a long, multi-volume sequence of poems written over decades and published in collected form in Italy and the US. As a translator he translated from a very wide range of languages, including French, Italian, Russian, Spanish, German & Haitian Creole. Jack was a devout communist and argued throughout his career for poetry as a public, working-class and revolutionary art. He co-founded the Revolutionary Poets Brigade and the World Poetry Movement's US circles, and he helped organize the San Francisco International Poetry Festival.
