Second Gear

Second Gear is Asheville's premier outdoor gear consignment + retail shop. Shortly thereafter we moved across the street to 444 Haywood road!

Second Gear began in West Asheville, and has been the local neighborhood consignment gear shop for over ten years. We opened our doors for business in the spring of 2004 in what is now part of Harvest Records' expanded store space. Now we fully reside in the River Arts District at 99 Riverside Drive in a shared space with Asheville Adventure Company and Sugar and Snow Gelato. We've enjoyed steady

growth, and have been steadily improving our operations and systems. For example, we recently got a new web-based consignment software, which allows us to show our inventory online in real-time at www.secondgearwnc.com. This means that as items are entered into the system or marked as sold, they are reflected as such instantly on the website! With this new software it is also possible to see which store an item is located in! As a business, we strive to create a win-win-win scenario, in which our consignors, customers, and we win. Our consignors win because they find a home for their gear that they no longer need to use, and they find a good price for their items as they sell. Our customers win through the monthly discounts, in which every month something doesn't sell it gets 10% cheaper, up to the point where it could be half off! We win because we get to continue to serve the Asheville community, and like customers and consignors through our business. Our most recent growth has allowed us to consign more items, and has allowed for continued improvement of our store space and facilities. This year we expanded into a 10,000sq building in the River Arts District which we now share with Asheville Adventure Company and Sugar and Snow Gelato. The now renovated space has more square footage, higher ceilings, and more natural light - all combining to give the customer an improved experience in the shop. Introducing our September / October Non-Profit of the Month: Color My Outdoors 🌿

What if getting outside wasn’t just about access to trails, rivers, and mountains...but also about seeing yourself reflected in the people leading the way?

That’s the work of Color My Outdoors, an amazing non-profit that is creating clear pathways for People of Color to confidently lead their families and communities outdoors. 🌲🏕️

Through access to certifications like Wilderness First Aid, Color My Outdoors cultivates outdoor Leaders of Color, then hires these leaders to run storytelling trips and family-based outdoor programs -- helping parents and caregivers build the skills and confidence to get their own families outside!

And their work doesn’t stop when the adventure ends...

Through their multimedia storytelling platform, they amplify these journeys and the voices behind them, helping rewrite the outdoor narrative and create a future where People of Color can see themselves reflected, respected, and leading in every corner of the outdoors. We love this because representation matters!!

At the heart of this work is Founding Executive Director Simone Adams, whose two decades of nonprofit leadership have helped make Color My Outdoors a driving force for community, career access, and a more inclusive outdoor industry. If you haven't met her, we definitely recommend you should - look for a tabling event in October to come meet her and learn more of Color My Outdoors work at the store.
